- New proposed laws that could give local authorities 'search-and-seize powers' to crack down on smoky fuels have been branded as 'inoperable'.
The Irish Independent reports the legislation - if passed - could allow them to stop vehicles, confiscate unapproved smoky fuels and in some cases raid private homes.
Smoky coal, poorly dried timber and most turf release high levels of smoke and particulate matter into the air which travels deep into the lungs.
Ireland's latest air monitoring report shows "concerning localised issues which lead to poor air quality."
It found that Ireland met all of its EU legal requirements in 2023 but did not meet health-based World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

- It is an “illusion” to think the State has the power to drastically cut immigration, Leo Varadkar has said.
The former Taoiseach hit the headlines once again this morning after he warned that immigration numbers have risen far too quickly in Ireland in recent years – and suggested it has been a real challenge for the country.
During a visit to the University of Notre Dame in the US, Deputy Varadkar said that while the majority of Irish people believe immigration had benefitted in Ireland in recent years, people were also “right” to think that numbers have risen too quickly.
On Lunchtime Live, Mr Varadkar said he “absolutely stands over” the comments.

- Leo Varadkar should have called on all parties to make a pledge on Irish unity while he was Taoiseach if he really believes in it, according to the former UUP leader.
Speaking ahead of a speech to the SDLP’s New Ireland Commission in Derry today, Deputy Varadkar said every party running for the next Dáil should make Irish unity “an objective, not an aspiration” in their manifestos.

- The new National Children’s Hospital’s €2.2 billion price tag might grow even further, a member of the Oireachtas Health Committee has warned.
The Chief Executive of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board appeared before the committee today and outline why construction company BAM has moved its completion date 14 times in the past four years.
David Gunning told the committee the approach being taken by BAM shows complete disregard for sick children, young people and their families.

- The father of a teenager who died in the Creeslough tragedy has said the lack of answers has made the grieving process harder.
Ten people died in the explosion at a petrol station in the Donegal village in October 2022.
Gardaí are currently conducting an investigation into the disaster but families have written to Justice Minister Helen McEntee asking for a public inquiry to be carried out at the same time.
Hugh Harper’s daughter, Leona, died in the explosion and on Newstalk Breakfast, he described her as a “vibrant, bright, energetic 14-year-old girl”.

- There is a risk that Irish peacekeepers will die in Israel’s airstrikes on Lebanon, a security expert has warned.
Over 550 people, including 50 children, have been killed in the Israeli airstrikes since Monday, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Meanwhile, the BBC reports that Hezbollah has retaliated by launching hundreds of rockets into northern Israel, with two people treated for shrapnel wounds.
Last week, thousands of pagers were blown up across Lebanon, killing dozens of people and injuring thousands more.

- More tweaks may be needed to Irish Rail timetables, the company's spokesperson has said.
The new timetables introduced in August caused substantial delays for commuters especially for trains travelling through Dublin Connolly.
Irish Rail has since amended the schedule.
The changes were introduced at the end of August to allow for the extra Galway and Waterford intercity services as well as the upcoming hourly service to Belfast which is due to launch in October.

- A total of 19 people were arrested by Gardaí at an anti-immigration protest in Dublin today.
In a statement, Gardaí said they had a "comprehensive policing operation in place" ahead of the protest.
Late in the afternoon, a sit down began on O'Connell Bridge and Green Line Luas services were unable to run between Dominick and Stephen’s Green.
There was also major traffic disruption.
Gardaí said they "engaged with protestors" and asked them to disperse from the bridge; when they did not, two Garda Public Order Units were deployed and 19 arrests were made.
No one was injured and traffic is now moving as normal.

- Gardaí have now seized drugs worth over €15.5 as part of a major international operation linked to a criminal communication platform.
The operation has so far seen 11 people arrested in Ireland.
Five men were detained in the Dublin and eastern region while six people were previously arrested as part of Garda activity directly related to the investigation.

- A new unmarked Garda lorry is being launched today in a bid to catch bad behaviour on the roads.
'Operation Iompar' involves Gardaí using a tractor unit fitted with blue lights to spot motorists and HGV drivers using their phones or not wearing seatbelts.
An unmarked patrol car follows the Garda lorry and then pulls in the offending vehicle.
The new lorry will be used by Roads Policing Units nationwide and will provide for "targeted enforcement on dual carriageway and motorway network throughout the country."
It will see two Gardaí in the lorry - a driver and an observer - with the observer spotting any offending drivers.
Gardaí say 'Operation Iompar' is already having yielding results - with over 100 drivers detected during three periods of action using the lorry - the majority of which were found to be using their phone while driving.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast from the Fine Gael think-in event in Tullamore this morning, Simon Harris said the move will help “maintain social cohesion” in Ireland.
Currently, asylum seekers living in State accommodation are entitled to €38.80 a week, while children receive €29.80.
They also receive meals and a medical card.
Asylum seekers are entitled to work in Ireland from six months after they first applied for international protection – and must pay income tax on the wages they receive.

Figures published this morning show that Garda numbers are continuing to fall despite nearly two years of active recruitment campaigning.
The Irish Times reports that there were 14,064 members in the force at the end of July, 35 less than at the end of June – despite the Government’s attempts to bring the force up to 15,000 members.
It notes that while the force aims to recruit 200 members each year, dozens of successful candidates from each intake have not been taking up their places in the last two years.
