- The Ceann Comhairle has announced she will not recognise a Dáil group containing TDs who support the Government as members of the opposition for today’s proceedings.
Yesterday’s efforts to elect a Taoiseach were dramatically derailed by opposition parties who were furious with the decision to afford opposition speaking rights to TDs backing the Government.
In a bid to break the deadlock, Verona Murphy has written to the Dáil’s business committee to say she is seeking confirmatory legal advice on how to recognise the Regional Technical Group in the future.
Earlier this morning, Micheál Martin and Simon Harris called for “proportionality” and said issues of groupings are a matter for the Dáil reform committee - which could meet as early as today.
The 34th Dáil met for the first time this year yesterday - but a tumultuous day ensued.
The new TDs were met by protesters calling on the incoming Government to e...

- The Status Red wind warning means schools and creches in most of the country will close, the National Emergency Coordination Group has said.
Higher education facilities will also shut and employers are being asked to let staff work from home where possible.
Counties will come under a Status Red wind alert at varying times on Friday morning, with the warning remaining in effect in most places until midday.
Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel said it is vital people avoid travelling during the worst of the storm.
“This is a phenomenally strong storm,” he said.
“Storm Eowyn will go down as a generational storm based upon the models and the strength of the winds that we’re seeing forecast.
“My advice and the advice of any of the agencies would certainly be to avoid travel during the peak times of the storm - irrespective if you’re in a Status Red or a Status Orange warning area.

- Description
- Almost half of the vehicles that took the NCT test last year failed, according to new data.
Figures published by CarTakeBack found that 875,901 cars failed the NCT while over 1.7 million tests took place.
On The Pat Kenny Show, transport consultant Conor Faughnan said unprepared drivers account for the high failure rate.
"On the face of it, it looks dreadful, but in fact almost all of these cars pass on a re-test," he said.
"If you look at when those cars came back to re-test for the NCT, if they need a full lane to do it, it’s about a 90% pass rate.
"If it’s just a visual re-check then it’s over a 99% pass rate."
Preparation
Mr Faughnan said many motorists simply "don't bother" to do any preparation for the NCT.
"It’s absolutely a backward attitude towards vehicle maintenance," he said.
"You’re supposed to maintain the car properly rather than just prep for a test ev...

- Many people have been spotted skiing and snowing in Wicklow, despite warnings to stay away from the mountains.
Wicklow is among the counties experiencing heavy snow and icy conditions with a Status Orange weather warning coming into effect this evening.
On Sunday, the Dublin-Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team urged the public to heed weather warnings and to stay away from the Wicklow Mountains.
On Lunchtime Live, Independent Councillor for Wicklow Gerry O'Neill stressed that there are "no designated ski slopes in Wicklow".
"It's a little bit irresponsible [to ski]," he said. "There is no such thing as safe roads in Wicklow in these conditions."
Cllr O'Neill said the roads that lead to the Wicklow Mountains are "treacherous at the best of times".
"On the Sally Gap, there are drops there off the road that could be 20 or 30ft deep - that could be fatal, let alone being injured," he said.

- Trump’s Return to Power: What It Means for January 6th Rioters Four Years On

- Description
- Today marks the fourth anniversary of January 6th, the day that saw rioters ransack the US capitol with the aim of overturning the 2021 election.
Many of the rioters were fanatical supporters of Donald Trump, who is set to become the 47th president of the United States, following the country’s November election.
Professor and political analyst Scott Lucas told The Pat Kenny Show that this event deeply shook himself and many other Americans.
“It took me days to realise the significance of what had happened,” he said.
“A lot of the initial pictures – you remember the guy who had the outlandish Viking horns and helmet and had his face painted, and you had people in all types of different garb and they were carrying away podiums, they had Confederate flags – and it all appeared to be at times a little of a really misguide prank.
“Then the reports started to come in about how many police officers had been wounded...

- Justin Trudea has announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister of Canada.
Mr Trudeau, who has led the world’s second largest country for nearly a decade, said he made his decision after discussing it with his family.
In December, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned, citing difference between herself and Mr Trudeau on how best to deal with the tariffs Donald Trump has pledged to impose on Canadian goods imported into the US.
Her resignation weakened an already embattled Trudeau whose popularity had been on the wane for some time.
Like Ireland, Canada has endured several years of high inflation and surging housing costs.
As a result, the opposition Conservative Party now enjoys a commanding lead in opinion polls and pundits were confidently predicting Mr Trudeau's Liberal Party would lose the next election.

- The Israeli Ambassador’s criticism of Ireland amounts to the “diplomacy of distraction”, the Taoiseach has said.
Earlier today, Israel’s ambassador to Ireland Dana Erlich told The Pat Kenny Show that Ireland's viewpoint of Israel is "extreme in its obsession" even within the EU.
She said that Israel has not seen the Irish Government “attempt to stop the incitement of hatred against Israel and the embassy”.
Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar made the decision to close the Israeli embassy in Ireland yesterday, claiming Ireland has "extreme anti-Israel tendencies".
Responding to the embassy closure and Ms Erlich’s comments in a doorstep media briefing, Taoiseach Simon Harris said he would “respectfully suggest” that it is a “distraction” tactic.

- Israel has announced in a statement today that it will be closing its embassy in Ireland due to "extreme anti-Israel policies”.
The decision was announced in a statement this weekend by Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.
The Taoiseach has said the decision is ‘deeply regrettable’.
There are no plans to close the Irish embassy in Israel.
Ambassador Dana Erlich - who was recalled to Israel last May - issued a statement earlier this year claiming she was concerned for the future of the Jewish and Israeli communities in Ireland.
On The Pat Kenny Show, Israel's ambassador to Ireland Dana Erlich accused Ireland of "isolating itself" in its relations with Israel.
