- Three big banks predict RBA to lift rates at least once more in 2026 | The Business | ABC NEWS
- Runtime
- 5:02
- Date posted
- Description
- Official July inflation data released on Wednesday was hot enough to force three of the four major bank economists to revise their interest rate forecasts. CBA's Belinda Allen is now predicting a November rate hike. ANZ's Adam Boyton has the same view. NAB's Sally Auld goes a step further with a prediction of a September rate rise, and a possible follow up in November. Westpac has kept its powder dry for now maintaining the RBA is on hold for the rest of the year. After three interest rate increases so far in 2026, the official cash rate sits at 4.35 per cent. A further hike would take it to 4.6% - the highest since October 2011. Financial markets have one rate increase priced in by the end of the year. CBA's Belinda Allen says, "we saw inflation strengthen across a broad range of factors, particularly domestic market prices and that just shows inflation is still here to stay."

- Description
- A Queensland hardware store owner has had a major court victory over retail giant Bunnings, in one of the first high profile uses of new 'no adverse costs laws'. The federal court ruled David Woodman won't be liable for Bunnings' legal fees if he loses his case against the retailer, which is trying to open up next door to his Mitre 10 business. Business reporter Emilia Terzon has been following the story and joined The Business to explain. She says David Woodman first learned in 2018 Bunnings was planning to open right next door to his Mitre10 franchise. His business, based in Jimboomba, would be put out of business if Bunnings opens the store. His lawyers believe it's the first known use of new NACO laws to avoid small players being liable for legal fees if they take on corporate giants. Bunnings says they note the decision on costs and will respond through appropriate legal processes, saying it's about bringing more choice and jobs to Jimboomba. - Qantas to retire A380s as it continues buying new planes | The Business | ABC NEWS
- Runtime

- Description
- After years of chronic underinvestment, Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson has embarked upon a massive fleet upgrade that will change Qantas' earnings profile. Another 31 new aircraft arrive this year, adding to the 17 that have just landed as the A380 is retired. The new jets are fuel efficient, and they will allow Qantas to add more premium seats across its fleet. Ms Hudson said customers value premium experience and they "want to fly to more points on the globe without stopping" and these new aircraft will enable Qantas to provide that service. Aviation analyst Peter Harbison said there's a lot of competition in this area, because many airlines are providing premium economy seats.
Qantas delivered $1.3 billion full-year profit but higher fuel costs from the oil shock in the Middle East hit the airline's bottom line. Fuel is every airline's biggest cost and while oil prices have eased in recent months, jet fuel is surging again. Domestic travellers remain the ai...

- RBA tipped to hike interest rates again, potentially in September | Finance Report | ABC NEWS
- Runtime
- 2:02
- Date posted
- Description
- Three of Australia's largest banks — NAB, ANZ and Commonwealth Bank — are now predicting there will be another interest rate hike, potentially as soon as next month.
Markets are 'pricing in' a 40 per cent chance of a September rate increase.
The Reserve Bank is likely to be concerned about the latest ABS data showing a surge in discretionary consumer spending on gambling, major sporting events and visits to the cinema.
The prospect of a fourth rate rise from the RBA boosted the Australian dollar to a three-month high, while the local share market experienced heavy losses.
While Qantas revealed a 20 per cent fall in its statutory full-year profit due to the recent surge in jet fuel prices, Wesfarmers reported an 8.3 per cent jump in annual profit.

- Thousands of unfinished homes are in limbo after major property developer, Bathla Group collapsed.
Administrators are urgently seeking funds of around $20 million to keep construction going for the next 5 weeks.
About 2,000 homes are under construction, and another 13,000 are in the pipeline.
Bathla had been showing signs of strain in recent months.
Universal Property Group, its main corporate entity, had liabilities close to $3.2 billion as of the end of June last year, and some suppliers, such as construction firm Delta Foundation say it hasn't been paid in more than 12 months.
Lawyer, Tony Taouk says it represents construction work, labour, and materials that have already been provided.
The property group also relies heavily on private credit to finance its projects - borrowing from a network of non-bank lenders.
That sector been under scrutiny in recent months after expanding into areas ba...

- Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the annual headline inflation rate rose to 3.5 per cent last month, down from 3.8 per cent for the year to June. The RBA's preferred measure of inflation did not budge, staying at 3.6 per cent for the third straight month. Economists say the figures have increased the risk of another interest rate hike before the end of the year. Barrenjoey chief economist Jo Masters says the data reaffirms the view that the RBA board will deliver another hike in November. Treasurer Jim Chalmers welcomed the "moderation" in annual inflation, but said he expected the data to fluctuate further in the coming months.
The same day Australia's largest supermarket chain Woolworths posted an 18 per cent surge in profit to $1.1 billion in the last financial year, driven by strong supermarket sales helped by its Ooshies collectables campaign and Big W returning to profit.

Rabbi Yehoram Ulman told the inquiry Australia was at a crossroads and encouraged strong recommendations.
Despite repeated calls to extend its timeline, the commissioner only requested more time for the final report so its release would not coincide with the anniversary of the attack.

- Investment redemption limits highlight more private credit risks, says Ian Verrender | The Business

- Description
- There are fears further problems in private credit are emerging with MA Financial limiting redemptions on a property loan fund in response to market conditions, as investors worry about its exposure to property development.
ABC's chief business correspondent says any move to freeze or slow down investor redemptions is "significant", because the company is saying they are expecting a rush of investors to come, asking for their money back.
MA Financial's move to limit redemptions comes in the same week as the collapse of property developer Bathla Group. While the two issues are not formally linked, Mr Verrender says they do illustrate the liquidity and default risks linked to private credit which corporate regulator, ASIC, has previously warned about of. And Ian Verrender says those risks are amplified in a housing market downturn, which is what is happening now.

A floating humpback whale carcass off the coast of Bawley Point on the New South Wales South Coast provided a spectacular feeding frenzy for numerous great white and tiger sharks.
The star of the show was a great white that cruised around a nearby 5-metre fishing boat, matching it for size.
"It was a monster," Pollard said.
