In Clark County, couples currently pay $102 for a marriage license with $50 directed from each one toward domestic violence and sexual assault programs
Elizabeth Abdur-Raheem, executive director of the collation, said the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services awarded $5.8 million from marriage license revenue last year. This year, that amount fell to $3.8 million.
“Every single county in our state, Clark County included, received 34.7 percent cut,” Abdur-Raheem said, adding that agencies received less than a month’s notice to adjust their budgets.
She said the decline comes as fewer couples obtain marriage licenses.

- Description
- Could water pulled from the desert air help Southern Nevada confront its water challenges — and concerns about the growing demand from data centers?
That is the goal behind a developing technology from WAVR Technologies, a Las Vegas startup commercializing atmospheric water-harvesting technology developed at UNLV.
The company’s latest prototype uses a salt-based liquid solution to capture water vapor from the air. CEO Rich Sloan says the system has moved from producing milliliters of water to a goal of generating about 20 liters a day from a unit this size.

- Description
- A state audit shows that the nation's fifth-largest school district didn't properly track millions of dollars spent on recruitment, retention, and district credit cards over three years.
The audit was completed by the Legislative Counsel Bureau’s Audit Division after a bill went into law in the 2023 legislative session.
Crisis in the Classroom investigative reporter Tiffany Lane is here to break down the numbers and the impact.
The audit looked at district spending between July 2021 and June 2024.
It breaks down moments when legislative auditors believe CCSD wasted public funds or didn't properly track where money was being spent.

- Description
- Nine years after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, Las Vegas is remembering the 58 people who lost their lives during the Route 91 Harvest music festival and the survivors whose lives were forever changed.
An emotional remembrance ceremony was held Thursday at the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden, where families, survivors, first responders and community members gathered to honor those lost on Oct. 1, 2017.
Two additional victims later died from injuries connected to the shooting, bringing the total number of people who lost their lives as a result of the shooting to 60.
More than 20,000 people were attending the final night of the Route 91 Harvest festival when gunfire erupted from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

- Domestic violence shelters remain strained despite restored bed space at The Shade Tree

- Description
- The Shade Tree has emerged from a major renovation with room for 250 beds, giving the Las Vegas Valley more shelter space at a time when domestic violence providers say demand for emergency beds continues to outpace what is available.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCEDSV) counted 43 domestic violence-related deaths statewide through August 2026, just two fewer than the 45 recorded during all of 2025. In Clark County, the coalition counted 33 deaths through August compared with 40 during all of last year.
“The average survivor leaves seven times before they leave, and each time they go back, it becomes more dangerous,” Elizabeth Abdur-Raheem, CEO of NCEDSV, said. “However, one of the reasons they're going back is because of this lack of shelter capacity."

- Las Vegas first responders cite lasting changes after Oct 1 shooting, led by 2 women

- Description
- The Oct. 1 shooting left lasting scars on Las Vegas and reshaped how first responders prepare for mass-casualty events, changes that have also influenced communities across the country.
One of the people tasked with helping drive those changes was Kelly White McMahill, who was a Metro Police captain at the time of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting and is the wife of Sheriff Kevin McMahill. In the aftermath, she was assigned to analyze every aspect of the response to identify where improvements could be made.
“So it’s a really vivid memory for me,” White McMahill said.
She said she and then-Undersheriff McMahill had been on the Strip earlier that evening with their three kids to see Blue Man Group.
