- Description
- A contentious Nye County Commission meeting Thursday drew hours of public comment as residents pressed county leaders to stop data centers from coming to the rural county.
The commission voted Thursday to enhance restrictions on data center development across Nye County, but did not approve a full ban — a decision that angered several residents who said they wanted data centers prohibited within county limits.
During the meeting, one speaker questioned the push to build in the area, asking, “The question is: Why do they want to build it here? What is the urgency to build it here?” Another told commissioners, “You need to get it straightened out. Ok? Because it is not going to fly. Ok?”

- Description
- A Las Vegas boxing coach is remembering a 15-year-old boy killed in last week’s First Friday shooting as a talented young fighter who was determined to succeed.
John Maynard Roberts coached Carth Jacobs-Rodgers at Bones Adams Boxing Gym. He says the teenager would go to great lengths just to make it to practice.
“He was rambunctious. He would come [from] North Las Vegas and take the bus and walk after that a mile and a half to Bones every day. He just had so much energy,” Roberts said.
Roberts believed Jacobs had potential in the ring.
“He was a good boxer. He would move. He was smart. He was still green. Still learning,” he said.

- Description
- Nevada has not executed a death row inmate in two decades, and a renewed effort this year to move two death penalty cases forward has again highlighted the legal, political, and practical hurdles that have kept the state from using capital punishment.
In May, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office announced it was filing a motion to issue warrants of execution for Donald William Sherman and Zane Michael Floyd. Court documents showed they would be executed on Sept. 14.
A date that has since passed with no executions carried out.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said he has no comment about Nevada’s death row cases at this time.
Scott Coffee, a lawyer who spent 30 years as a Clark County public defender, said he is not surprised the process is taking so long.

- Description
- Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended federal immigration officers involved in Thursday night’s ICE-involved shooting, saying the officers believed their lives were in danger as he sharply criticized New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s condemnation of the incident.
A 28-year-old man, identified by police as Oscar Belgal, was shot in the neck while driving with a 5-year-old boy inside his car, officials said. Mullin said ICE was not aware a child was in the vehicle and blamed Belgal for fleeing, ramming vehicles and driving toward officers.
“The public outcry should be also towards this criminal, this thug, this gangbanger, this possible murderer,” Mullin told reporters. “That rage should be with him for endangering the five-year-old.”
Federal officials said ICE officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx at about 4 p.m. to arrest Belgal, whom DHS described as a Dominican national with a prior gran...

- The City of Las Vegas and Clark County are at odds over the cost of providing fire and rescue services in the growing northwest valley as a longstanding mutual aid agreement approaches its expiration date.
The agreement allows firefighters from both jurisdictions to respond to emergencies based on availability and proximity, regardless of city and county boundaries. But city leaders say continued growth in the northwest valley is putting additional pressure on Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, and they want the county to contribute more toward the cost of those services.
“The challenges that growth in the northwest area is placing on the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department” have become a primary concern, Las Vegas City Manager Mike Janssen said.

- Two Southern Nevada domestic violence organizations are taking different approaches to offset declining state funding, as one provider raises the possibility of increasing marriage license fees to support services for survivors.
News 3 first reported on a nearly $2 million decline in state funding generated through marriage license fees for domestic violence and sexual assault programs across Nevada. The decline comes as fewer couples obtain marriage licenses, reducing the revenue available to organizations serving survivors. Nevada relies on revenue from marriage license fees as its only dedicated source of state-generated funding for domestic violence and sexual assault programs, leaving providers vulnerable to fluctuations in the number of couples getting married.
SafeNest CEO Liz Ortenburger said the organization’s funding from the state was reduced by about $900,000 from the typical $2.6 million. The organization operates on an annual budget between $9 ...

- A recent string of shooting incidents has renewed questions about how Nevada can address gun violence, as new data show homicides rising in Las Vegas even while overall firearm-related cases decline.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police statistics show there had been 81 homicides in the valley as of Oct. 4. That marks a 27% increase from the 64 homicides recorded by the same point last year.
Metro statistics indicate 58 of this year’s homicides were by gunshot, accounting for about 72% of all homicides so far this year. Nevada Crime Stats data show that about 60% of last year’s homicides were caused by a firearm.
Despite the increase in homicides, Metro data indicate firearm-related crimes overall are trending down. Police reported 5,522 firearm cases this year, down from nearly 6,500 at the same time last year.
Arrests in firearm cases have also decreased. Metro reported nearly 4,500 firearm-case arrests around the valley this year, com...

- Fewer homes were sold in the Las Vegas area last month amid rising mortgage interest rates, according to a local industry group.
The median price of existing single-family homes sold in Southern Nevada in September was $470,000, per Las Vegas Realtors. That's down 1.1% from this past August, when the median price was $475,000, but the same as September last year.
For condominiums and townhomes sold last month, the median price was $290,000, down from August and a 1.4% decline from September 2025.
Las Vegas Realtors President George Kypreos said rising mortgage rates are playing a bigger role in the housing market.

- Description
- With midterm elections less than a month away and early voting 11 days out, affordability has become a central focus for candidates in Nevada, where high gas prices and housing costs continue to strain household budgets.
Gas prices remain a major issue across the state. According to AAA, the average gallon of gas in Nevada costs about $5.48, more than $1 higher than the national average of nearly $4.37. A year ago, the average gallon of gas in Nevada was just below $3.91, while the national average was $3.13.
Federal and state lawmakers have continued looking for ways to lower gas costs, including proposals to eliminate the gas tax. In Nevada, the state gas tax is 23.8 cents per gallon, with the money going to the State Highway Fund and additional county and city road funds. That tax is in addition to the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, bringing the total gas tax to about 42.2 cents per gallon.

- In the days following violence at First Friday in downtown Las Vegas, questions have focused on what could change at the monthly event. But the shooting has also renewed another conversation: Where can young people go to stay busy and out of trouble?
At the Donna Street Community Center in North Las Vegas, organizers say they are trying to provide one answer.
The center gives children and teenagers a place to learn, spend time with friends and participate in programs after school — at no cost to their families.

- Charter schools see growth, but funding concerns remain as enrollment shifts statewide

- Description
- Student enrollment continues to drop across Nevada, creating budget concerns for public schools.
The Clark County School District faced a nearly $52 million budget shortfall before Gov. Joe Lombardo signed an emergency regulation to provide temporary relief to CCSD and other impacted districts.
In Nevada, money follows the student, so if enrollment is down, so is funding to a school.
Like CCSD, charter schools also receive funding based on student enrollment. While overall charter growth is up, some schools are still feeling the squeeze. Now, they are urging lawmakers to find a long-term solution.

- Las Vegas A’s new ballpark Athletic Club sells out ahead of 2028 move

- Description
- The soon-to-be Las Vegas Athletics have hit an early benchmark in their push toward a new ballpark on the south end of the Strip: one of the stadium’s top premium amenities is already sold out.
The team’s front office says the Athletic Club, an exclusive hospitality club planned behind home plate, has sold out well ahead of the team’s planned arrival in the spring of 2028. UNLV assistant professor Bill Robinson, a sports economics expert, said the early demand is a positive signal for attendance.
“Well, they they want everybody in town to see that this is going to work. It’s going to be good, right?” Robinson said.
Robinson said selling out the Athletic Club this far in advance is an “early inning home run,” particularly because A’s President Marc Badain said 76% of the purchases were made by Southern Nevada residents and 70% were bought by individuals rather than businesses.
