- The Liberals now have their majority in the House of Commons, but the implications of that change may be more significant than Canadians realize. It's not just that the Liberals will have an easier time passing legislation or that they no longer have to worry about confidence votes. In this interview with Rob Breakenridge, former Conservative MP Damien Kurek warns that the important work of committees in scrutinizing legislation and holding government to account is about to be trampled in what he calls a "democratic sin." This majority was not achieved through an election, Kurek notes, whereas the makeup of committees does reflect that democratic will. And yet, the government is setting the stage to ensure they have a majority on all parliamentary committees, thus replacing accountability and oversight with what's essentially a rubber stamp.

- Nearly one year after winning a minority government, Prime Minister Mark Carney has parlayed a handful of floor crossings and byelection victories into a majority - the first Liberal majority government in seven years. Last week's defection by now-former Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu marked the fifth floor crossing to the Liberals (four Conservatives and one New Democrat), while the Liberals swept all three byelections Monday night.
As his first act as a majority prime minister, Carney announced Tuesday morning a temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel — diffusing a potential liability on the affordability issue that the Conservatives had sought to exploit. In this video, Rob Breakenridge is joined by Postmedia National Political columnist Tasha Kheiriddin to discuss her belief that we could now see Mark Carney unencumbered with a majority in place. We'll also discuss the potential fallout for an already reeling Conservative Party with rumours...

- A recent National Post column has prompted a warning from the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) and sparked a debate around the sentencing in the justice system and the extent to which Canadians - and the media in particular - are able to scrutinize and criticize those making these decisions. In this interview, Rob Breakenridge speaks with National Post columnist Jamie Sarkonak about her recent column on the growing reliance on racial considerations in decisions around evidence and sentencing, and the influential role played by Faisal Mirza, a former lawyer who now sits as an Ontario Superior Court judge. The CBA responded to that column with a news release that “warns the media on dangers of delegitimizing judges.” Canadians, though, have a vested interest in matters pertaining to the justice system and the media has a duty to keep the public informed, which means scrutiny and criticism. We'll get Jamie's reaction to the backlash against her piece and why there's an important convers...
