- MONTEREY — The first time Ice Skating by the Bay was set up a little more than 10 years ago, Debby Weiss of Monterey showed up asking for a job. She was more than qualified because she knew how to ice skate and as a bonus had first-aid experience.
“I called it the best-worst job I’ve ever had,” said Weiss, as she laughed and watched groups of people, young and old, skate their way around the temporary rink at the Custom House Plaza on Saturday afternoon.
Weiss, a PE teacher at Monterey’s Monte Vista Elementary, is now one of the managers of Ice Skating by the Bay and has stuck around the ice rink for nine of the past 11 years.

“It happened so fast I didn’t have time to think what the ramifications were,” Pezzini said. “It was a quick toss and I was right there.”
Pezzini locked in and made a game-saving tackle at the 1-yard line as time ran out Friday, propelling Palma to a 40-35 win over previously undefeated Aptos High.
“It was the biggest tackle I’ve ever made,” Pezzini said. “We were all running around the field after the game. Emotions were running high. It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

“I want to go on my bike,” said Will to his dad, Peter Berridge.
Will was one of more than 100 kids who showed up to the Monterey Off Road Cycling Association’s annual event.
Some kids went on a 2-mile trail ride, while others stuck around the large dirt lot set up with two obstacle courses — one for tiny tots and another for more advanced riders.

For the first time since 2010, the Breakers didn’t produce a winning record, mustering just 54 points all season.
“It was a freakish year,” Pacific Grove Coach Chris Morgan said. “Our numbers were low and those that were playing had not come through the program. We didn’t have a lot of continuity.”

Meghan Webb, eighth grade humanities teacher and ASB director, said there’s nothing worse than having a scared, helpless kid arrive on the first day of class.
“They’re going to be that way regardless, but if they got these activities, they’ve met new friends, they’ve gotten to know some of the older kids,” Webb said. “It just really works out in a lot of ways.”

- Produced and written by Annie Roth
Less than 30 years after the Pacific sardine population was deemed “recovered,” the stock has once again fallen into a severe slump according to stock assessments conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Scientists estimate the West Coast population of Pacific sardines has declined by 95 percent since 2006. Although sardine populations naturally fluctuate in response to shifting climatic conditions, overharvesting is believed to have accelerated the stock’s collapse. Although no one knows exactly how long it will take for the sardine supply to replenish, many scientists are certain it won’t be anytime soon.
