- On September 2, 1991, Lithuania and Canada have signed a mutual written agreement to establish full diplomatic relations.
Canada has never recognized the forced incorporation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union. During the Soviet occupation, the country's diplomatic representation, Lithuanian radio programs, Lithuanian newspapers were published, and a large Lithuanian community was active in this country. Canada was the first G7 country to recognize the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Lithuania in August 26, 1991.
Today, Lithuania and Canada are close allies. We are united by democratic values, commitments to human rights, freedom of the media and multilateralism. Canada is a close ally in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and makes a significant contribution to security in the Baltic region. The Constitution of 3 May was not the final state reform. The transformation of the state system culminated in the adoption of the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nation on 20 October 1791, significantly equalizing rights of both entities.
The Mutual Pledge ensured equal representation for the Lithuanian and Polish citizens in the common state bodies and confirmed a strong union between the two nations. It is officially recognized as the first written constitution in Europe, and the second in the world after the USA.
The Constitution of 3 May was not the final state reform. The transformation of the state system culminated in the adoption of the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nation on 20 October 1791, significantly equalizing rights of both entities.
The Mutual Pledge ensured equal representation for the Lithuanian and Polish citizens in the common state bodies and confirmed a strong union between the two nations. The adoption of this law shows that Lithuanian society had preserved the tradition of the country’s historical separation and political independence.
Ideas stated in the Constitution continued to inspire future generations that led Lithuania and Poland to independence in 1918. And now continue to inspire Warsaw and Vilnius...
