- Description
- As the Labour Party has pledged to hold a referendum on voluntary assisted euthanasia if elected to government, the issue became one of the most personal moments in our interview with PN leader Alex Borg.
Asked where he stands on euthanasia and abortion, Borg reaffirmed the PN's opposition to abortion before explaining why he personally cannot support euthanasia.
He recalled how doctors gave his father just six months to live after being diagnosed with cancer, only for him to undergo treatment abroad and go on to live another six years.
"Imagine if, during those six months... he had been given the option of euthanasia," Borg said. "We would have lost six years of my father's life."
Borg said those six years allowed his family to create memories they never thought they would have - travelling together, spending more time together and watching his father regain his quality of life.
"It shaped the way I think and the way I act," he...

So we decided to investigate.
Armed with a booking confirmation, a camera and a healthy dose of misplaced optimism, we headed to Comino to see whether the island's new visitor booking system is making a difference.
Along the way, we spoke to tourists from around the world, asking whether they thought Comino was too crowded.

He admits Malta does have serious problems, especially for young people facing high living costs… but insists that zooming out is just as important as zooming in.
“I’m not saying we don’t have problems. I’m saying the big picture isn’t as bleak as we make it out to be.”
He pushed back on claims that he was making “sweeping statements”, arguing that poverty is in decline and that hope comes from seeing progress, not just shortcomings.
And when asked whether he was being idealistic?
“Yes, I am an idealist. Not because we’ll ever reach the ideal, but because the ideal puts you on the right path.”

Jake argues that while he’s an optimist, there are trends heading in the wrong direction and unless “drastic action” is taken, Malta risks creating a self-fulfilling cycle of worry for the next generation, even asking: “Who will take care of our parents when we’re older?”
Mark pushes back, insisting that we’ve never been better overall and that solutions exist, including the four-day work week, if people fight for them.

Mark counters by zooming out: comparing today to earlier decades and even wartime Malta to argue that overall, the country has advanced dramatically, even though many individuals are indeed struggling.
