- Chuck E. Cheese's grown-up-focused arcade opens first location in California
- Date posted

- Description
- Many grown-ups no doubt have fond memories of a childhood visit to Chuck E. Cheese. Perhaps it was a robotic performance from one of the once ubiquitous animatronic bands, or vague recollections of a pizza party and a Skee-Ball tournament. But to enter a Chuck E. Cheese today is to set foot in a fully-realized kid-focused video-game-inspired palace, one where digital floors encourage a more active form of play. No more, except at a few select locations, does Munch’s Make Believe Band exaggeratedly strike its guitars and pound the drum set. There are still arcade games, of course, but a modern Chuck E. Cheese leans more activity center than retro, low-lit game room. McKillips says the the company’s core locations today heavily target those between the ages of 3 and 8.
And thus, Chucks Aracade, says McKillips, will fill a void, aiming to reach those who have fond memories of a Chuck E. Cheese but have clearly outgrown the company’s target market. He’s hoping Chuck’...

- Erik Menendez to remain in prison after decision by California Parole Board
- Date posted
- Description
- Erik Menendez will not be released, the California Parole board decided in a highly anticipated and lengthy hearing Thursday, curtailing for now the contentious push by he and his older sibling to be freed after the 1989 killing of their parents in their Beverly Hills home.
The hearing came after years of legal efforts by Menendez and his brother to be set free despite being convicted of life without the possibility of parole in 1995. Their jury trial, and accounts of an abusive upbringing in the upscale Beverly Hills home, inspired several documentaries and television series that drew renewed attention to their case and allegations of sexual abuse against their father.
The hearing — the first time Erik Menendez, 54, has faced the Parole Board — offered a never-before-seen glimpse into his life behind bars over more than three decades. A separate hearing for Lyle, 57, is set for Friday.

- California voters will decide redistricting in November, escalating battle with Trump
- Date posted

- Description
- Ratcheting up the pressure in the escalating national fight over control of Congress, the California Legislature on Thursday approved a November special election to ask voters to redraw the state’s electoral lines to favor Democrats and thwart President Trump’s far-right policy agenda.
The ballot measure, pushed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state and national Democratic leaders, is the latest volley in a national political brawl over electoral maps that could alter the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections and the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.
If voters approve the redrawn lines on Nov. 4, Democrats in the Golden State would see the odds tilted further in their favor, while the number of California Republicans in the House could be halved.

- Immigration agent in San Bernardino fires shots at vehicle
- Date posted

- Description
- The attempt by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in San Bernardino to question the men in the truck on Saturday morning, captured on video by a family member in the back seat, ended with allegations from federal authorities that agents were injured when the driver tried to “run them down.”
“In the course of the incident the suspect drove his car at the officers and struck two CBP officers with his vehicle,” read a statement from the Department of Homeland Security. Because of that, the official said, a CBP officer discharged his firearm “in self-defense.”
DHS did not answer follow up questions about why they were trying to arrest the man in the car or about the condition of the officers who were struck.
Later, at home, family members took photos of what appeared to be at least two bullet holes in the side of the truck.
“At the moment that they broke the windows, the driver of the vehicle felt like his life was in...

- Dodgers’ Max Muncy to miss several weeks because of oblique strain

- Description
- Ahead of their biggest series of the season, the Dodgers suffered another significant injury blow.
Third baseman Max Muncy is headed to the injured list with a Grade 1 oblique strain, manager Dave Roberts said Friday ahead of the team’s pivotal divisional matchup against the San Diego Padres.
The Dodgers are hopeful Muncy’s injury — which Roberts said was similar to, but more mild, than the oblique and rib problem that sidelined him for much of last year — won’t be season ending.
However, Muncy will be out for at least several weeks, with Roberts offering no firm timetable beyond that.
In a corresponding move, the Dodgers claimed infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
The last time the Dodgers lost Muncy, to a knee injury in early July that kept him out for about a month, their offense crated.

- Putin and Trump conclude high-stakes summit over Ukraine war, don't answer questions

- Description
- President Trump and Vladimir Putin held nearly three hours of talks over the prospects for a ceasefire in Ukraine on Friday, negotiating for hours at a U.S. air base in Alaska over the future of Russia’s military campaign, a war of conquest that has resulted in Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II.
Trump had said before the summit he would know if Putin was serious about peace within minutes of their meeting. Yet, before the talks began, the Russian leader, a global pariah since launching his full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, received a red carpet arrival on American soil and a greeting of applause from the U.S. president.
It was an extraordinary welcome for Putin, whose government has called the United States an “enemy state” and who faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Ukraine. Putin’s war has led to 1.4 million casualties, according to independent analysts, including 1 million dea...

Earlier, in a cavernous hangar at a Royal Jordanian Air Force base, soldiers from Jordan, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and Singapore assembled to prepare the 79 tons of rice, sugar, pasta, tomato paste, dates and other basic foodstuffs set for the day’s drop.
Despite the sweltering heat, the soldiers stationed at the King Abdullah II Airbase worked quickly, the hangar an ants’ nest of activity as they secured one-ton piles of aid boxes to pallets, wrapped them in protective fabric, then tightened the rigging before using a forklift to hoist a parachute above each one.
No less active were the crews of the seven dark-gray cargo planes arrayed on the tarmac nearby, their bellies open a...

- Description
- The first presidential summit in years between Russia and the United States is on, setting nerves in Europe and Ukraine on a knife’s edge. But President Trump may have a surprise in store for Vladimir Putin.
Efforts to scuttle the high-stakes meeting have not been subtle. European officials issued statements in recent days on the futility of Trump negotiating with Putin over Ukraine without Ukraine, urging the U.S. president on Wednesday to not cut a unilateral deal. Kyiv warned that Moscow’s proposals for peace — rewarding its war of conquest with territorial concessions — are a nonstarter. Many Russia experts are hoping one side simply decides to call it off.
Despite their efforts, the summit — haphazardly scheduled on American soil with days to spare — is moving ahead, with Trump scheduled to host the Russian leader at a U.S. military base in Anchorage on Friday, the first meeting of its kind since 2021.

- In an expansion of tactics started in June during immigration raids in Los Angeles, President Trump on Monday announced he would activate 800 National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. to help “reestablish law and order” and “take the capital back.”
“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people,” Trump said at the White House briefing room.

Trump, who sent roughly 5,000 Marines and National and Guard troops to Los Angeles in June in a move that was opposed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. - There’s more to California ground squirrels than the holes in your garden.

- Description
- California ground squirrels pack a lot of grit into their roughly 12-inch frame (not counting the tail).
The burrowing rodents do epic battle with rattlesnakes. And last summer the critters exhibited never-before-documented carnivorous behavior: Researchers observed the squirrels killing and eating voles in a San Francisco Bay Area park.“
That was shocking,” said Jennifer Smith, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and lead author of a study on the finding.
But the squirrels might be best known for their homes. You know, those holes dotting L.A.’s parks, hillsides and home gardens. The burrows, which can damage crops and infrastructure, drive some people nuts. But scientists say they play an important role in the ecosystem, serving as a food source for numerous animals. Once upon a time, people used to chow down on them.
Now, “what we're seeing is the ground squirrels are doing the hunting,” Smith...

“We’ll sue,” Newsom said during a news conference with Texas legislators over California’s effort to counter a contentious Republican redistricting plan in that state.
President Trump is “trying to silence academic freedom” by “attacking one of the most important public institutions in the United States of America,” Newsom said, adding that he would “stand tall and push back against that, and I believe every member of California Legislature feels the same way.”

Now other parts of the country are watching the events in California, expecting federal agents to target their immigrant communities, particularly in states with no judicial orders blocking them.
“We saw the videos, the images coming out of Los Angeles. We definitely thought we would be next,” said Rey Wences, with Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which runs a hotline that monitors raids. “We’re just waiting for the shoe to drop.”

- Federal agents use Penske rental truck as 'Trojan Horse' to raid Westlake Home Depot
- Date posted
- Description
- Border Patrol agents raided a Home Depot in Westlake as a top federal agent warned, “We’re not leaving,” and posted images of half a dozen border agents running from a Penske truck through the parking lot.
As many as 16 immigrants were reported rounded up and arrested in what U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Greg Bovino called “Operation Trojan Horse.”
The early morning raids revived fears of more widespread sweeps that organizers had hoped would ease with a federal judge’s order, affirmed by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel, that immigration officials cannot racially profile people or use roving patrols to target immigrants.

Now you can enjoy baijiu punch and dim sum in a space inspired by Chinese apothecaries and family recipes, experience matcha in martini form, slip into what feels like a raucous downtown house party (red Solo cups included), and sip a rainbow of margaritas from a team that landed on the World’s 50 Best Bars list.
There are rooftops prime for sunshine sipping near the beach, technique-driven cocktail destinations with sultry playlists, and bars with food so good it’s tough to say what’s better: the bites or the beverages.
In the last few months and at the tail end of 2024 a number of seasoned vets also branched out with new bars: The Thunderbolt team launched a neon-disco drinking den, pasta impresario Evan Funke debuted a cocktail lounge inside Mother Wolf restaurant, and the Little Jewel of New Orleans owners leaned into their Big Easy od...

- Las Vegas is down on its luck as tourism drops. Why it’s kind of California’s fault
- Date posted
- Description
- Sin City is facing a summer swoon, and Californians — by far the largest tourist contingent, data show — are partially to blame.
Visits to Las Vegas were down 11.3% in June 2025 versus a year earlier, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Traffic on Interstate 15 at the California-Nevada border was down 4.3% over the same period, suggesting fewer visitors from the Golden State heading for Vegas casinos.
The number of air travelers into Las Vegas overall declined 6.3% over the previous June. In 2024, Californians made up more than a fifth of air travelers into Vegas, with nearly half of those coming from the Los Angeles metro area.
A demographic report from the visitors authority estimated that Southern California provided 30% of all visitors to Las Vegas in 2024.
Add it all up, and Californians could be responsible for a significant portion of the decline in Vegas tourism.

- Date posted

- Description
- Investigators are looking into whether a Las Vegas man who went on a deadly shooting rampage in Manhattan on Monday was targeting the National Football League after it emerged that the gunman was a Los Angeles high school football player with a documented mental health history.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that the shooter, identified by law enforcement officials as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, appeared to have a grievance with the NFL but ended up on the wrong floor of a skyscraper that houses the sporting league’s headquarters.
“He seemed to have blamed the NFL,” the mayor told the WPIX-TV news station. “The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.”
