That was shocking,” said Jennifer Smith, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and lead author of a study on the finding.
But the squirrels might be best known for their homes. You know, those holes dotting L.A.’s parks, hillsides and home gardens. The burrows, which can damage crops and infrastructure, drive some people nuts. But scientists say they play an important role in the ecosystem, serving as a food source for numerous animals. The Times reviewed dozens of witness and surveillance videos, pored through criminal complaints and interviewed lawyers, advocates, bystanders and experts to understand how on-the-ground operations have unfolded this summer and where the points of contention are.

Traffic on Interstate 15 at the California-Nevada border was down 4.3% over the same period, suggesting fewer visitors from the Golden State heading for Vegas casinos.
The number of air travelers into Las Vegas overall declined 6.3% over the previous June. In 2024, Californians made up more than a fifth of air travelers into Vegas, with nearly half of those coming from the Los Angeles metro area.
A demographic report from the visitors authority estimated that Southern California provided 30% of all visitors to Las Vegas in 2024.
Add it all up, and Californians could be responsible for a significant portion of the decline in Vegas tourism.

- A legal group co-founded by Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff and architect of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Dodgers earlier this week, accusing the team of “engaging in unlawful discrimination under the guise of ‘diversity, equity and inclusion.’”
The lawsuit, filed Monday with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by America First Legal, was first reported Wednesday by The Athletic. The Dodgers declined comment about the complaint, which also named their ownership group, Guggenheim Partners and the Dodgers’ professional groups for employees, such as the Black Action Network and Women’s Opportunity Network.

Garcia, a photographer and doctoral student Claremont Graduate University had been picking up a delivery at Home Depot, when someone approached the customer desk and said something was unfolding outside.
“La migra, La migra,” he heard as he walked out. He quickly grabbed his phone and followed agents around the parking lot, telling them they were “f— useless” until he came to a group of them forming a half-circle around a box truck.
A Border Patrol agent radioed someone and then slammed his baton against the passenger window, his video shows. Glass shattered. He unlocked the door as people shouted.

- A 20-year-old Walmart employee was returning from break on Tuesday when he saw Border Patrol trucks taking a maintenance worker in the parking lot, he jumped out of the car and wheeled the man’s trash can in front of the vehicle as other passersby gathered around the truck yelling, blaring their horns.
Surveillance and other video captured at the scene and looped in social media feeds show an agent sprinting out of the truck and then pushing Adrian Martinez to the ground. He stands back up arguing and chaotic scuffle erupts.
“What is he doing? He’s a f***king hard worker,” Martinez can be heard yelling as more armed agents arrive some in plain clothes, shoving him and forcibly arresting him.
