Most of that spending is going toward rising military costs, programs like Social Security and Medicare, and Trump's tax cuts. The war in Iran has already cost the U.S. more than $34 billion, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
This comes as Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, shut down just over a year after it launched. DOGE claimed $55 billion in savings, but former Labor Department chief economist Betsey Stevenson found the number to be closer to $1 to $7 billion. Meanwhile, the tariff revenue the administration expected never materialized.

- Ty Simpson made a strong first impression in his NFL debut. The rookie quarterback completed 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the Rams' victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Head coach Sean McVay praised the rookie's command of the offense, calling it a great step in the right direction while noting the team will continue evaluating the backup quarterback competition. Stetson Bennett started the game and led a field goal drive before handing things over to Simpson, who capped off two second-half drives with touchdown passes to running back Dean Connors. The Rams also saw encouraging performances from their young talent, including rookie tight end Max Klare, who caught seven passes, while the defense held the Chiefs without a touchdown in the 20-12 win.
