- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Waco Police Department is investigating a possible drowning in the Brazos River Saturday.
Waco police said crews are searching the area near W. Waco Dr. and University Parks Dr. Waco Fire and Texas Game Wardens are searching the Brazos on boats.
Shortly before 6 a.m. on Aug. 10, police officers responded to the bridge in the area to investigate a report of an individual jumping off the bridge into the river below.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a blue vehicle on the W. Waco Dr. bridge.
Authorities are actively searching for the individual, a police spokesperson said.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) – After years of development, the Cameron Park Zoo officially opened the Gloria and FM Young Penguin Exhibit.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, August 8, celebrating the Zoo’s 22 African Penguins.
“There is just something special about penguins,” Brendan Wiley, Director of the Cameron Park Zoo, said. “Seeing the amount of fun that people are having here today really makes us feel not only great about opening this particular exhibit at this time, but it also makes us feel great about our future.”
The habitat was a multi-million-dollar project that features an underwater viewing area, a wave machine and a night house. Wiley said he hopes the exhibit inspires people for years to come.
“This exhibit will serve future generations and hopefully inspire people to make a few small little changes that will help these animals in their wild homes,” Wiley said.

Melissa Lowe, of Austin, who worked at the NBC affiliate in Waco from 1999 to 2005, mostly as the main evening anchor, had just landed in Austria Wednesday night.
She was with her husband, Matt, daughter, Contessa Cason, 15, and niece Kinlee McGuire, 17, when the news broke.
”I felt fear, disbelief and also gratitude,” Melissa said. The trip some 6,000 miles away was planned ten months ago as a Christmas present to the teenagers who love Taylor Swift.

The program is funded by donations collected by the barber school throughout the year. People have the option to pay above the $7 haircut charge. The school takes that money and puts it towards its 25¢ haircut program.
This program is meant to help parents prepare their kids to return to school. Killeen parent, Katie Grant, said it helps this time of year go smoother for her family.
“It’s a really easy way to get all the kids haircuts knocked out in one go and then also let people learn how to deal with little kids and getting their hair cut cause it can be really difficult to have them in a normal salon setting,” Grant said.

- The Troy community is praying for a miracle after a search for a local family was reportedly suspended when a vessel overturned off the Alaskan coast over the weekend, according to social media posts written by friends of the family.
According to KTUU TV in Anchorage, Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard late Sunday suspended the search for a family of four in waters about 14 miles west of the Homer Spit. The vessel reportedly capsized Saturday night.
Friends in Central Texas identified the family as David and Mary Maynard of Troy, Texas. The couple had spent the last week vacationing in Alaska with their children, according to a post on David Maynard’s Facebook page.

But on Tuesday they nearly tripled that number, delivering a total of 19 babies in just 22 hours; which was shocking since just the day before they only delivered two.

- WACO, Texas (#KWTX) - #FloydCaseyStadium, located at S 29th St and Dutton avenue in #Waco, was home to #Baylor University’s #football team for 64 seasons.
Having first opened back in 1950, the stadium served both Baylor and the Waco community for many years, becoming a landmark for the city.
The stadium closed back in 2013 for the new McLane Stadium, and on May 14, 2016, the historic football stadium was demolished after the city ended up with the property in a land swap with the university. After the stadium’s demolition, the city was left with 72 acres of open land.
For the past eight years, the massive property has been relegated to dirt and grass, but soon, the land will be transformed into a multi-million dollar housing development and park.

After Gary Johnson’s adopted son, Chris Johnson, died in a motorcycle accident on Thanksgiving in 2022, Gary wanted to make sure his son didn’t end up as just another statistic. That’s when he approached the city’s parks and recreation board about honoring Chris’ memory of community service.
The city approved a statue of Chris with a storyboard to be placed at Pepper Creek Trail, a trail Chris frequented. But Gary would have to pay for the statue.
In 2023, Gary created the Christopher Johnson Foundation. He used the foundation to involve the community behind Chris’ values and raise the money for the statue.

According to authorities, the victim has been identified as 30-year-old man Dipak Oli who was a clerk at the store.
KWTX spoke with another Gator Stop #3 store clerk, Stephen Sunny, who said he spoke with authorities about the incident.
“The two guys, they came with a gun in the morning, around 5:20… that’s what the cops said,” Sunny said. “And Dipak was standing by the counter, on the register. So he tried to run, but he couldn’t make it, they already started shooting.”

“I just wanted to do something that could help promote just a stress-free environment,” she said. “There’s so much stress and chaos going on in the world right now, and I just wanted people to have a place to escape, so I thought, well, we’ll get people outside, we’ll do yoga, we’ll have cows. It’ll be a great time. I think people will really enjoy it.”
She said people will line up their yoga mats on one of their green pastures and be surrounded by open fields filled with their miniature cattle.

- The #Groesbeck #Police Department said Junior Officer Lincoln came to the rescue to assist one of their local, elderly residents, according to a Facebook post.
Groesbeck police said they responded to a request from one of their local elderly residents who had locked themselves out of their house and had no way back in since all the doors and windows were locked.
Officers found a small “doggy door” on the house and decided to contact Junior Officer Lincoln to see if he could help. Junior Officer Lincoln responded immediately and was able to crawl through the doggy door to unlock the door for the resident.
“He saved the day because I wasn’t fitting through that doggy door,” responding officer Tammi Konvicka said.

“Respondents who had the lowest levels of anxiety and depression were those who consistently played sports throughout their entire childhood,” said Upenieks.
“We didn’t formally test the mechanisms, but it goes without saying that playing sports in childhood builds good exercise habits, teamwork, self esteem, confidence."
All of those traits can be carried into other areas of your life.

- Heart of Texas Gymnastics is reeling after Coach Doug Dorn, who left an impact on many who attended the gym, suddenly passed away.
28-year-old Robert Douglas Dorn taught gymnastics at Heart of Texas for about 12 years. He’d been going to the gym since he was two years old, starting as a student.
Nate Lambert trained under Dorn at the Heart of Texas gym. He later worked alongside Dorn as a gymnastics coach. Lambert said Dorn was more than just a coach.
“He was never really just a coach to me, he was one of my best friends,” Lambert, 17, said.

- A catholic priest is awaiting extradition from Florida to Central Texas to face sexual assault allegations from his time in Waco.
An investigation into Father Anthony Odiong first began back in March of this year after the Waco Police Department received reports of a sexual assault.
Since then four women in #McLennanCounty have come forward and police are continuing to search for more survivors in their investigation.
From 2006 to 2012 Fr. Odiong served at Baylor’s Saint Peter’s Catholic Student Center in Waco and Saint Mary’s of the Assumption in West, which is where her attorneys say Jane Doe had contact with him.
