Lilli Woods, who was 14 at the time of the accident, says she grew up around the rodeo and loved watching the bull riders.
“It’s always something I wanted to do,” Woods shared. But she never got the opportunity to try it, until she started riding colts for CT Bryant Cutting Horses.
“I just got the opportunity to ride broncs and I did that and I love it, I really do,” she said, “And then I got the opportunity to ride bulls a few months later and it started from there.”
Because she started later than most kids she had to just dive right in. However, things were going well… until that one ride on January 18th.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Cell phones have officially been banned in classrooms during this legislative session, and all public schools have their own rules on what to do with the phones, like lockers or pouches.
While some school districts have funding for pouches for their students, most school districts we spoke with adopt their own rules and disciplinary actions when funding isn’t readily available.
Schools had to come up with their own rules to make sure their students won’t use their phones, such as confiscating them if they are caught or in-school suspension.

- KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - The father of #SerenityBaker, the Killeen teenager who was stabbed and killed at school, has filed a lawsuit against #KilleenISD and Evolv Technologies Inc., the company that produces and provides the district’s weapons detection system.
The lawsuit states that Serenity Baker’s death was a result of the Defendants’ negligence and wrongful conduct.
Serenity Baker was 14 years old when she was stabbed and killed by a fellow classmate in the hallway of Roy J. Smith Middle School on March 20.
The lawsuit states that Serenity would have been entitled to bring this action against them had she survived.
It argues the Texas Constitution guarantees students the right to life, liberty, equal protection and due course of law and that KISD violated Serenity’s rights.

C&C Land Services led the effort, asking the community for donations in order to be able to buy them for the district.
“There was such an overwhelming amount of donations and support they also added a copy of the Texas pledge and a copy of the United States pledge,” Superintendent Brashear said.

Waco Police Assistant Chief Mark Norcross told the city council in September that crime has increased 20 times near businesses with eight-liner machines.

She was diagnosed shortly after undergoing open heart surgery.
“This is the most painful, heartbreaking - anything that you can think about - this is it,” Kiahaura’s mother, Karina Mateo, shared.
Mateo says she learned Kiahaura had down syndrome well before she was even born. She also learned about a month before giving birth that Kiahaura had a hole in her heart.
“Because of the placement of the hole, they needed to perform heart surgery, and they couldn’t do it through the shoulder so they had to do open heart,” Mateo explained.
The baby had to undergo surgery when she only six months old. The surgery was a success and everything seemed fine - until it wasn’t.

- WACO, Texas (#KWTX) - In about two months, a pair of Central Texans will make a trip to Arlington in hopes of being crowned the strongest person in the world.
“This is our biggest strongman competition there is out there,” said #JadeDickens, a retired educator from Gatesville who’s set to compete in the games.
#IanBracken is also set to compete. He echoed a similar sentiment.
“Outside of the TV show ‘The World’s Strongest Man’, it’s the only way to get the title of ‘World’s Strongest Man’ for any class that’s not the super heavyweight open,” he said.

- FORT HOOD, Texas (#KWTX) - #FortHood soldiers are always looking for new ways to get the edge on the battlefield.
The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team is training on the #Switchblade 600 missile drone system.
It’s a remote-controlled missile that can travel more than 25 miles and take down heavy armored vehicles far from the front lines.
“There’s about a five pound payload from a Javelin anti-tank missile, onboard a battery-operated drone basically,” said Martin VanBuren, Flight Operations Supervisor with AeroVironment. “It’s about a 5-feet-long, 75-pound drone.”

- WACO, Texas (#KWTX) - #UnitedK9, a veteran-owned, Texas-based dog training company, offers service dog training to assist those struggling with mobility issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues.
September is #NationalServiceDogMonth, a time to celebrate and educate about the importance of service dogs’ work. Lisa Williams, the #Waco United K9 owner and trainer, said that she has seen firsthand how her clients’ lives can change with the help of service dogs, especially a veteran struggling with the effects of #PTSD.
“Before he had the dog, he said he was scared to even go to Walmart. He didn’t like to be around people. He would have flashbacks,” she said. “But after the dog was trained, he felt very confident in what he had. I feel that a service dog is going to give them the life that they deserve.”

- TEMPLE, Texas (#KWTX) - It was just over a week ago, on September 7th, that 12-year-old Brayton White had to be airlifted to the hospital after a go-kart and side-by-side accident.
While he is now doing better and on the road to recovery, his dad says in that moment they weren’t sure if he would make it.
“To be honest it didn’t look very promising at the very beginning… I didn’t know if I was ever going to see him again,” Darren White said.
