- Tamara Wilson is a multimedia artist from and working in Fairbanks, Alaska. She creates artwork influenced by daily life in the beautiful ancestral lands of the Dena people of the lower Tanana River where she has built her home and studio. Wilson's exhibition Slinkies and the Window Frame features studio work and site-specific installation created out of a variety of ingredients including remnant tile, truck bed liner, imitation bubble gum, oak, felt, and expanding foam. The exhibition desires to understand the domestic by pretending and discovering who and what occupies that space. The objects and creatures are created from a place of nostalgia, longing, and cosmic curiosities.

Proceeding from my life as a community college teacher of anthropology and as a commercial fisherman, this talk will pose questions about the increasingly authoritarian character of institutions and attitudes in 21st Century United States. Are the guardrails against social disintegration and anomie being removed? Is fascism a useful term to describe the cultural and political trajectory of the present moment? What are the sources of popular anxiety which lead to the desire for submission to a strong leader? How do we engage in practices which maintain an open society?

The U.S. military has been actively engaged in most of these areas. There is growing fear of a wider war across the Middle East, but the truth is that a low-level war is already here. They started in Hanoi and made their way to the South, visiting historical sites made famous during the War, such as the ''Hanoi Hilton'' prison, Khe Sanh, My Lai, and Cu Chi Tunnels, exploring the history and impacts of these places on the people and culture of modern Vietnam, as well as themselves. In this multi-faceted presentation, Nguyet Nguyen, Diane DeSloover, Marin Hart, Dean Maas, Kaylea Stoakes, and KJ Metcalf will share insights and experiences from their journey of discovery and healing.
The presenters wish to acknowledge the Juneau chapter of Veterans for Peace, which made a considerable donation to the class's travel budget, a gift that helps to offset the costs for some students, and mitigate the legacies of war in Vietnam.
