According to police, four people were found unresponsive at a residence in Mountainair, three of whom have since died.
Some 18 first responders who attended the scene “began experiencing symptoms, including nausea and dizziness” after they were exposed to an unidentified substance, police said.
They were then transported to University of New Mexico Hospital which said they were “decontaminated,” according to an Associated Press report.
Two of the first responders were in “serious condition,” state police said.

- Volunteers with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rescued a dog that had fallen off of a Devon cliff on May 15, the RNLI said, releasing this footage of the dramatic rescue.
The dog, Bailey, was scared by another dog during a cliff top walk, slipped her collar, and fell “from the coast path onto the rocks below, which were inaccessible by land,” RNLI said.
A RNLI lifeboat was launched with a rescue crew before one of the crew members braved rough waters to secure Bailey and swim back to the lifeboat with her.
Bailey’s family said, “We’ll be forever grateful to the RNLI Ilfracombe crew for saving our beloved Bailey [… she] escaped with a broken tooth and after a day recovering from her ordeal is back to normal.”
