"Very simply, we cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the United States. Tuesday, the Attorney's Office charged Michael Merkel with two counts of perjury in a criminal trial to secure a murder conviction.
The charges are in regard to the case of Russ Faria, who was accused of murdering his wife Betsy in 2011. The case went to trial in 2013, where Faria was wrongly convicted. His conviction was later overturned in a 2015 re-trial and Russ was freed after spending three years in prison.
In 2021, Betsy's friend Pam Hupp was charged in the case with first-degree murder. A jury trial in St. Charles County is scheduled to begin in Aug. 2026.
