- Missouri GOP shifts to caucus system for presidential candidate selection
- Date posted
- Description
- Selecting a presidential candidate this year will be a bit different for Missouri residents, as the Missouri Republican Party gears up for its caucuses Saturday morning.
The switch to a caucus system comes as state lawmakers did away with the presidential preference primary elections. Jay Ashcroft says the caucus system allows each party to control the process by which candidates are vetted and win delegates for the party conventions later this year.
“And so, the republicans doing their caucuses, they are entirely in control of those rules and how they want to do it. So, we’re really acting more as a reference to them if they need information, if they need you know, voter data information that’s a public record, we give that to them. We’re trying to get out information about it as they give it to us. But the rules and how it’s run is all up to the Missouri republican party.”

- Organized youth sports are on the decline in many communities across the country. According to Forbes, in 2022, kids played fewer team sports than in the previous four years including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
KRCG 13 met with those involved in youth sports in the mid-Missouri area to find out what factors are driving kids out of sports and how we can better encourage our athletes. And what they think is driving the decline as well as the important lessons taught through sports.
According to Business Insider, 45% of US children aged 6 through 12 played a team sport in 2008.
That number dropped to just 37% in 2021.
Steve Schellman, senior program manager for youth sports for Jefferson City Parks and Rec, says one of the most important aspects of youth sports that is often overlooked is the lessons participants can take away from the experience.
“They learn a lot of life skills like hard work, teamwork, perseverance, ...

In the wake of Wednesdays mass shooting at end of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally, Minority Leader and Springfield Representative Crystal Quade says, she and her colleagues want to do more to put reasonable restrictions on gun purchases and reverse the prevailing GOP policy to protect and preserve the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. constitution. But their ability to act is limited and ultimately voters have to act.

Audra Davis, a Jefferson City mom and nutritionist, does homeopathic coating that offers a holistic approach to healing. She says her kids have been dye-free since birth. She tries to avoid additives like Red dye 40, which has been linked to multiple behavioral issues, autism, increased hypersensitivity reactions and has even been named a possible carcinogen by the National Library of Medicine.
"One thing that a lot of people don't know is that Red 40 is derived from petroleum," she said. "And so whenever we think of petroleum, that's actually like gasoline in your car, or like tires on your car and that's in our food for our kids. And a lot of times, the people who are getting ...

- Examining reasons for mid-Missouri's rising rent: supply, demand and catastrophes
- Date posted
- Description
- According to Apartments.com, rent has increased by 2.6% in the past year, making the average rent in Columbia $960 per month for a one-bedroom apartment.
However, it could be more depending on the area. Conrad Hake, the Program Director for Love Columbia, a local housing nonprofit, said the number of vacancies in the city is increasing rental prices.
"Simple supply and demand in economics is a big factor," Hake added, "Our vacancy rate in Columbia, as of the 2020 census, was 5%. So that means there are fewer properties available for people to rent."
Hake explained that fewer listings in mid-Missouri allow prices to increase, allowing landlords to request double the deposits from renters and require renters to have a higher credit score than usual.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost two dozen measles cases have been reported since December 1, with the first cases being found in the northeast.
Dr. Taylor Nelson, an infectious disease physician with MU Health Care, said measles is one of the most transmissible diseases and will likely continue to spread through the Midwest and to the West Coast.
Though the disease was eradicated in the U.S., if an unvaccinated person goes to a country where a disease is still common, becomes infected, and brings it back, they can spread the virus to other unvaccinated people.

The classes also got to ask KRCG 13 producers, reporters, anchors, and meteorologists questions as they prepared for the noon broadcast on CBS.
The students reflect on their experience as being eye-opening and educational as they continue exploring the field of broadcast journalism.
Having the chance to have fun in front of the green screen is always a plus, as well!

- Mortgage rates decrease in mid-Missouri but housing affordability remains challenging
- Date posted
- Description
- According to Freddie Mac, mortgage rates in mid-Missouri are around 6% for a 15-year fixed rate and averaging about 7% for a 30-year fixed rate.
Rates are slightly down from just four weeks ago when the 30-year rate was 6.7%.
The big question is, what does this mean for the housing market?
Denise Pittman, President of the Jefferson City Board of Realtors, said, "Rates are volatile, and there are many factors that go into making them go up or down.”
Those factors include the state of the economy, interest rates, and demand.

- Missouri's GOP Gov. Parson reflects on past wins in his final State of the State address
- Date posted
- Description
- Missouri’s Republican Gov. Mike Parson looked back on past wins in his final State of the State address Wednesday, lauding his achievements after assuming leadership in the chaotic absence of his disgraced predecessor, Eric Greitens.
Parson, who at the time was serving as lieutenant governor, took over as the state’s top executive in 2018 after Greitens resigned rather than continue fighting possible impeachment and allegations of personal and political misconduct.
“We closed the chapter on scandal and began a new direction, because there was no turning back,” Parson said. “We declared a fresh start and the return of stability.”
As governor, Parson has worked to cultivate an image of a practical leader focused on tangible achievements for taxpayers as a contrast to Greitens’ tumultuous and aggressive governing style.

- Sonic healing: The resurgence of sound baths as a holistic approach in mid-Missouri
- Date posted
- Description
- Sound baths are taking mid-Missouri by storm, and it's believed to create frequencies and vibrations that interact with a person’s body.
Brenda Jungmeyer, a wellness instructor, said, “The future of medicine is frequencies, and we’re seeing that more and more in how this frequency can lower your blood pressure and be used for chemotherapy patients to help bring their pain level down.”
Jungmeyer uses sound to take participants on a journey in a low-lit room with yoga mats, pillows, and blankets as she creates frequency vibration with bowls, gongs, and other instruments like the thunder drum to benefit the mind and body.
“It just gives out a nice thunder vibration, and that’s just to help open any blockages and kind of shake us up a little bit to open us up,” explained Jungmeyer.

- Ashcroft vs. Fitzpatrick: Secretary of State publicly reponds to Auditor's review
- Date posted
- Description
- Charges from Tuesday, Jan. 23, that Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick does not understand legal obligations and a suggestion that a deep state might be at work in the auditor's staff, characterized Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's public response to a scathing review by Fitzpatrick.
The audit targeted two areas of performance by the Secretary of State's office. First, it chastized Ashcroft for not turning over records from cyber security checks conducted by a third party of elections data in all 114 Missouri counties.
"When I'm in the business of going in and enforcing recommendations, we're there to provide the information to the public, the legislators," Fitzpatrick said.
Ashcroft insists that it had nothing to do with a willful lack of cooperation. He said his office had no authority to demand the security checks and had to agree with a "vast majority of local elections officials, not to release any information about them."

- Abortion rights advocates, lawmakers recognize 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade
- Date posted

- Description
- It no longer is the law of the land, but that did not dissuade abortion rights advocates of recognizing the 51st anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in the Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion.
Two years ago the court's decision and the Dobbs v. Jackson decision returned control over abortion to the states, and Missouri's trigger law outlawing most abortion procedures went into effect.
Now, advocates on the street and abortion rights lawmakers in Jefferson City want to do away with that too.
The issue got thrust back into the spotlight last week when a coalition of abortion rights groups launched a court delayed petition drive for a right's ammendment on the fall ballot.
"This is a victory for Missourian's right to vote for their reproductive freedom," Mallory Schwartz, Abortion Action Missouri Executive Director, said.
But the effort to reverse Missouri's abortion ban will not end there.

- Description
- The Jefferson City Fire Department is taking full advantage of the brittle weather conditions by organizing its rare ice rescue training at McKay Park ... and KRCG 13 put a GoPro on the firefighters to see what the training looks like first hand.
The unique training only takes place when the weather conditions permit, by allowing ice to cover bodies of water in the area.
According to Captain Matt Luebbert with the Jefferson City Fire Department, the drill requires ice to be a minimum of four inches, which can hold up to 800 pounds, and temperatures outside must be warm enough for firefighters to jump into the water.
“The deployment model is that seat belt-riding firefighters that are in the back will prepare. If we get sent out to a response like this, they will have their feet in the suit, and as soon as we pull the parking brake on the scene, they will finish getting ready while the other crews are trying to attempt to reach the victim from th...

NAACP Leader Mary Ratliff said she remembered the time of segregation.
“I’m from Ripley, Mississippi. We were just a very close-knit family. We were close because everybody was kin.”
As a little girl, Ratliff grew up in Southern Mississippi during the time of segregation.
She remembered signs separating the white and Black communities.
“You went around back to get your ice cream cone. I remember all of that, and you just did it because this sign says colored, and this sign says for whites."

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to handle the adversity well.
Handled the Miami Dolphins quite well, too.
Mahomes threw for 262 yards, found Rashee Rice eight times for 130 yards and a touchdown, and made several daring runs for key first downs. Isiah Pacheco pounded over the frozen turf for 89 yards and another score. And the Chiefs shut down a prolific Miami offense in a 26-7 victory in the wild-card round of the playoffs Saturday night.
