- Shannon Harps, a 31-year-old employee of the Sierra Club in Seattle, was stabbed to death the night of New Year’s Eve 2007. She was walking from a grocery store to her Capitol Hill apartment when a man followed her into her stairwell and stabbed her in the chest. The manhunt continued for weeks, and after police found a DNA match to the knife left at the scene the killer confessed. Former Seattle homicide detective Cloyd Steiger explains the case and his investigation, paired with KIRO 7 archive video from 2007 and 2008.

- DeWayne Lee Harris was convicted of killing three women and leaving them in The Jungle, a Seattle homeless area near Interstate 5, in the late 1990s. He claimed to have killed more, though there wasn’t evidence to prove that. Harris’ victims were Denise Marie Harris, 42; Antoinette Jones, 34; and Olivia Smith, 27. On Jan. 15, 1999, Harris was sentenced to 94 years in prison. "I have never run into anyone who has shown the kind of lack of reverence for human life," King County Superior Court Judge Marsha Pechman said at Harris’ sentencing.

- On Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016,Tacoma Police Officer Reginald Jake Gutierrez was fatally shot responding to a domestic violence call. The suspect was later killed after a standoff with police in which he used two children as a shield.
Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool announced his death shortly before Gutierrez’s body was taken from Tacoma General Hospital to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. This video shows the procession and tribute that Wednesday night, using audio from Cool’s briefing to reporters. The video was taken by KIRO 7 photographer Damien Glitch and created by KIRO 7 Executive Producer Casey McNerthney.

- On March 27, 1984, Detective Michael Raburn was stabbed with a sword while responding to a mentally ill man at Yesler Terrace in Seattle.
Rayburn, who was a detective with the King County Sheriff’s Office, tried to serve an eviction on the man, Robert Baldwin. Rayburn was stabbed with a sword when the door opened. Rayburn returned fire, and Baldwin barricaded himself inside the apartment.
After a 17-hour standoff, Baldwin was shot by Seattle police.
Rayburn, who was survived by his wife, worked 12 years with the Sheriff’s Office. The agency’s Southwest Precinct in Maple Valley is named for him and Detective Sam Hicks, who was killed in 1982.

A small portion still remains at the Green Lake Small Craft Center. Bob Hope performed for an overflow crowd in 1962. Led Zeppelin played their first Seattle show at the Aqua Theatre opening for Three Dog Night at the Aqua Theater, May 11, 1969.

- Sicks’ Stadium at what’s now Rainier Avenue South and South McClellan Street was built in 1938 and lasted until 1979. The Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League played there, as did the Seattle Steelheads of the Negro Leagues. It was Seattle’s first Major League ballpark in 1969 for the Seattle Pilots. Jimi Hendrix watched Elvis Presley play there in 1957 and later played their himself on July 26, 1970.

- Fred Bonner, a former Seattle Municipal Court judge, admitted that for more than a decade he improperly received a discounted parking rate that he was not entitled to, according to the state Commission on Judicial Conduct.
His conduct was exposed by a KIRO 7 investigation, in which Bonner was followed for month and recorded violating city regulations.
This investigation was done by KIRO 7’s Casey McNerthney and Amy Clancy, and delivered on television by Amy Clancy.
The investigation won a 2015 Emmy Award for Politics/Government reporting from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

- DNA that could link criminals to hundreds of unsolved crimes has gone untested for years in Seattle, despite judges’ orders to enter the samples into an international criminal database, KIRO 7 reported in August 2016.
Most of the cases involve sexually motivated crimes, and nearly all the victims have not been notified of the problem.
After KIRO 7’s investigation, Democratic and Republic lawmakers pledged to solve the problem, which requires a Legislative fix, in the 2017 session.

- Leon Brigham, called “the sly fox,” was a legendary Garfield High School football coach who won or tied for eight city championships between 1928 and 1938. He ran trick plays -- the bootleg, naked reverses, hidden ball plays -- and brought the T-formation to Seattle high school football. Brigham became the first athletic director for Seattle Public Schools in 1944. He made Seattle public high schools able to play for the state championship, and organized the first night football game. When Memorial Stadium was unveiled in 1947, he was the man behind the success of sporting events there. He was selected as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Man of the Year that year.
“At Garfield he took Wasp kids, Japanese boys, Chinese, African-American and Jewish kids,” his friend, Emmett Watson, wrote in the Seattle Times in 1992. “He melded this mix of ethnicity and heritages and taught them, above all, to have respect for one another.

Seattle restaurant, known as The Blob, is torn down on November 18, 1997.
On November 18, 1997, the restaurant commonly known as The Blob is torn down in Seattle. Located on lower Queen Anne Hill at the corner of 1st Avenue N and Roy Street, the structure – which resembles a melting igloo – is removed to make way for condominiums.
Rounding the Corners
The Blob started out as a boxy structure, built in 1946 to house Clyde’s Cleaners. In the 1950s, Paramount Cleaners moved in and operated there until the 1970s, after which the building became home to a variety of restaurants, none of which achieved any success.

A man began scaling the all-glass facade of Trump Tower on Wednesday using large suction cups. Watch the full two-hour incident below.
The climber had a backpack and used a harness and rope stirrups to fasten himself to the side of the 58-story Manhattan skyscraper. He appeared to be at least 10 stories up and still climbing Wednesday evening.
Police grabbed the man and pulled him inside shortly after 6:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Officers smashed windows and broke through a ventilation duct in an attempt to block his progress. Officers also lowered themselves toward him using a window washer's platform.
The climber played a slow-motion cat-and-mouse game with officers, eluding them by methodically working his way across the facade and angled corners of the building.
