- Marine researchers are sharing the heartbreaking story of a bottlenose dolphin seen mourning the loss of her newborn calf in Western Australia's Leschenault Estuary. The dolphin, known as Fraggle, was observed late last week carrying the body of her calf, which had been born just two weeks earlier.
The loss marks another tragedy for Fraggle, who researchers said has now lost her last four calves.
Marine experts explained that dolphins are known to carry their deceased calves for a period of mourning that can last several days. During that time, mothers often remain close to their calves before eventually letting go so they can feed and care for themselves.

- El Paso County commissioners have proposed the highest property tax rate they could adopt without triggering an election, but county officials stressed Monday that the number is only a ceiling and a lower rate could still be approved.
Commissioners voted to propose a rate of $0.504717 per $100 of taxable property value for the 2026 tax year. The county identifies that number as the voter-approval rate, which is generally the highest rate a taxing entity can adopt without asking voters to approve it in an election.
“So historically, Commissioners Court has published the voter-approval rate, which is the highest rate that the county can adopt without going out for an election,” El Paso County Budget Director Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria said.
The county said commissioners have not adopted a final tax rate and could still choose a lower one as they finalize the fiscal year 2027 budget.

- Wealthy Americans in several states could soon face higher taxes as progressive leaders push new revenue measures aimed at high earners, even as officials weigh concerns that some residents could move to lower-tax states.
In California, the state Democratic Party has officially endorsed a “billionaire’s tax” initiative that would go before voters. The proposal would impose a one-time 5% fee on about 200 billionaires in the state if it passes. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has opposed the state-level approach, warning it could drive wealthy taxpayers to relocate.
“You would have a windfall one time, and then over the years you would see a significant reduction in taxes because taxpayers will move. And that is what I fear at a state level,” Newsom told Bloomberg in January. Newsom has instead pushed for a national billionaires tax.
In Washington state, Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a new law creating an additional 9.9% tax on residents who earn mo...

- Millions of Americans begin their home search online, where listings now commonly include information about a property's potential exposure to flooding, wildfire, heat and other climate-related hazards. But the growing use of private climate risk scores is becoming the focus of a political debate, with critics arguing the ratings may unfairly influence home values and buyer decisions.
Alongside government flood information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), many real estate websites, including Zillow, Redfin and Realtor.com, also display climate risk assessments from First Street, a private data company. The company uses predictive modeling to estimate how climate-related risks could affect individual properties over time.
Supporters say those projections give prospective buyers a more complete picture of future risks that may not be reflected in historical government data. First Street says its mission is to help consumers and busines...

Ferguson said he has spoken with President Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
About 5,000 homes and 60,000 people have been evacuated as firefighters work to contain the fires, and authorities have opened an evacuation shelter at the Spokane Convention Center. Officials continue to report more than 600 structures damaged or destroyed, though they cannot yet break down how many are homes, businesses, schools or other buildings.

- The Democratic Socialists of America is facing mounting scrutiny after comments from one of the organization's national leaders reignited debate over the group's platform and its influence within the Democratic Party.
The renewed attention follows a weekend television interview in which DSA National Co-Chair Megan Romer reaffirmed several of the organization's long-standing goals, including abolishing the U.S. Senate and replacing the presidency and Supreme Court in their current forms. Romer also said prison abolition remains a long-term objective, as is defunding the Pentagon, abolishing ICE, abolishing national borders and establishing government ownership of large corporations. They also sim for universal healthcare and a 32-hour work week.
The interview quickly gained traction online, giving Republicans fresh material as they seek to portray Democrats as embracing far-left policies ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

- They were conversations former President Joe Biden believed would remain largely private. But now the Department of Justice has allowed for their release.
The audio recordings were posted by The Oversight Project, a branch of the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.
At the time, Biden was the former Vice President and had the conversations with his ghostwriter, Mark Zwonitzer, who was assisting him with his memoir “Promise Me, Dad.”
The recordings are from late 2016 and early 2017 and included multiple references to classified information he apparently had in his home, despite being between his years serving as vice president and president.
"Some of this may be classified. Be careful. Okay, I'm not sure," Biden said.
In another recording, he said, "I just found all the classified stuff downstairs."
Some are now criticizing these conversations because of Biden’s reaction to boxes of classified documents being found at Donald ...

- Description
- President Donald Trump is pressing Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., to keep the Senate in session until it passes the “Save America Act,” while also urging him to end the filibuster.
Trump shared his position on Truth Social on Monday, writing, “Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER.”
Trump reiterated the push while heading to Michigan ahead of the state’s primary elections next week. “He’s just got to get his job done. You’ve got to get the Save America Act passed, or better than that would be the filibuster. If you terminate the filibuster, everything happens,” Trump said.

- A Socorro police officer working an off-duty assignment helped a 1-year-old child who was found unattended inside a running vehicle outside a Walmart Supercenter last week, according to the Socorro Police Department.
A Walmart employee flagged down the officer after noticing a young child alone inside a running vehicle. The officer immediately located the child and requested assistance from emergency medical personnel.
Authorities said no arrest was made at the time of the incident.
The case will instead be submitted through the appropriate non-arrest process for consideration of a charge of abandoning or endangering a child with intent to return, police said.
