- A 60-day deadline tied to U.S. efforts to negotiate with Iran has arrived without a broader agreement to end the war or fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising new questions about how long Washington should continue pursuing diplomacy while attacks and disruptions persist in the critical shipping corridor.
The deadline comes two months after Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at beginning peace talks and restoring traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The Trump administration has also reportedly pursued a back channel with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as part of efforts to break the diplomatic stalemate.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Washington insider Armstrong Williams said negotiations should continue but argued Iran must face consequences if it fails to honor its commitments.

- Though negotiations between the United States and Iran broke down more than a month ago, Monday marked the formal expiration of a preliminary peace deal that was meant to lead to long-term peace. Instead, the warring nations are preparing for potential escalation as they each refuse to cede control of one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
Iran and Oman are close to finalizing a deal that, according to Tehran, would reinforce Iranian control over much of the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war was used to ship one-fifth of the world's oil.
"An understanding has been reached regarding the map of the transit route. But we had planned, and still plan, to finalize the understanding in the form of a package: the map plus a joint statement," said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.

- A new poll showing growing support for socialism among Democratic voters is highlighting an ideological divide inside the party as Democrats look ahead to the midterm elections.
A CBS News poll found 58% of Democrats have a positive view of socialism, compared with 32% who view capitalism positively. The findings come as democratic socialist candidates and organizations have gained greater visibility in Democratic politics, while some of the party’s most prominent leaders are distancing themselves from parts of the progressive agenda.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made clear Sunday that he does not support Medicare for All, a signature proposal championed by many democratic socialists.
“It’s not legislation that I am currently co-sponsoring or that I support,” Jeffries said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Republicans are seizing on the divide, seeking to tie Democratic candidates across the country to controversial statements and proposal...

- Students and staff at Guillen Middle School celebrated Friday after the Texas Education Agency rated the campus a B, ending three straight years of F ratings.
The TEA’s A-to-F ratings consider factors including student achievement and school progress.
Principal Leticia Terrazas said one of the first challenges was getting students to accept higher expectations.
“There was pushback. I'm not going to lie. There was pushback at the beginning. But slowly but surely, the students were able to build the trust with their teachers, and they saw the good in things. We were able to make those gains because they finally understood the why behind this,” Terrazas said.
In December 2024, KFOX14/CBS4 reported that the El Paso Independent School District was redesigning Guillen.
Teachers who wanted to stay had to reapply for their jobs as the school prepared to adopt Accelerated Campus Excellence, or ACE.

Investigators identified the women as Maribel Fresses, missing since 2018, and Gabriela Amerondo, missing since 2012, but their bodies have not been found.
Former FBI agent JJ Klaver says the absence of bodies makes the investigation especially difficult because authorities lack an easy DNA source to compare with forensic evidence from the home. Police have also recovered more than 20 containers of an unknown substance from an alleged basement lab, five urns containing cremated remains, zip ties and a handwritten note referencing serial killer Ted Bundy.
Investigators have reportedly examined only a small portion of the digital evidence and continue searching the home for forensic links to other victims or missing people. Klaver says a witness coming forward could help break the case ...

Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani discussed what could happen next during an interview with 7News anchor Megan Clarke, saying Mangione’s attorneys are expected to argue that New York’s double jeopardy protections prevent the state murder prosecution from moving forward.

That change is coming, with a series of recent victories by more progressive candidates, including those who call themselves Democratic Socialists.
My hope is that our democracy will never be the same," Abdul El-Sayed said.
Last week’s narrow win by Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary race for Senate in Michigan is now top of mind for the party.

That rate assumes voters approve the voter-approval tax rate election, or VATRE. If voters reject it, YISD says the district would have to lower the operating portion of the rate.
That total rate is about half a cent lower than last year’s $1.2005 rate, according to a district presentation.
A lower tax rate does not necessarily mean a lower tax bill. If a property’s taxable value increased, the owner could still pay more.

The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump hid in a catering truck to board a plane after entering a different one in Turkey, the Middle Eastern country that shares a border with Iran and which hosted the July NATO summit attended by the president and other allied leaders. Trump confirmed Tuesday he changed planes but didn't explain the threat he said prompted the covert action.
"The Senate should be immediately briefed on the Iranian threats against the President, the extraordinary measures taken to get him out of Turkey, any risks posed to U.S. personnel, and any threat to the homeland," Schumer said in a statement. "It is unacceptable that Congress was kept in the dark and instead learned about this serious threat through press reports."

- Dona Ana County commissioners unanimously approved the creation of a new Community Monitoring Committee aimed at keeping residents informed about the Project Jupiter data center in Santa Teresa, even as opposition to the project continues.
The vote was unanimous.
County officials said the committee will be made up of residents tasked with getting information about Project Jupiter out to the community and providing a place for residents to ask questions about the data center’s potential impacts on water, air, noise and pollution.
Dona Ana County Commission Chair Manuel Sanchez said Project Jupiter companies will be asked to cooperate with the committee and take part in its information forums.
“Yes, I think it's clear that they don't contractually have to obligate to participate, but I think this is an excellent opportunity for them to participate,” Sanchez said.
County documents say the committee will have 11 members...

- Description
- Hunter Biden has returned to the public eye with a string of high-profile and viral interviews, fueling renewed speculation about whether the controversial figure could have a political future.
In recent weeks, Biden has appeared in long-form conversations with prominent voices, including some who have criticized him in the past. He has been a frequent target of conservative media and political figures over his laptop, his business dealings and his struggles with addiction, but he has now been sitting down with some of those same people and, at times, finding common ground.
On “The Tucker Carlson Show” on Monday, host Tucker Carlson said, “I advocated for all kinds of things that I now regret advocating for.”
“Particularly the things that you said about me,” Biden replied as the two laughed.
Carlson added he should have been more understanding about Biden's battles with addiction.

- Description
- Voters in several states are heading to the polls Tuesday in a series of closely watched primary elections that could shape both parties' strategies heading into the November midterms.
The contests include Democratic primaries in Wisconsin and Michigan, where progressive and self-described socialist candidates are competing for statewide nominations, as well as Republican races in South Carolina and Minnesota.
Speaking with The National News Desk, The Daily Signal national correspondent Tony Kinnett said Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary is one of the races drawing the most national attention.
"We're seeing them in battleground states like Wisconsin," Kinnett said of socialist candidates. "It definitely changes the conversation about the general election."
Kinnett argued that many of the voters propelling progressive candidates through Democratic primaries differ from the broader coalition needed to win a statewide general election.

- Description
- Meta has agreed to comply with new standards for large data centers in Texas aimed at limiting their impact on the state’s electric grid, water supplies and surrounding communities, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday.
The commitment comes after Abbott directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, to scrutinize proposed data center projects and require developers to provide more information about their electricity needs, water consumption, public incentives and potential effects on nearby neighborhoods.
“I established clear guardrails to ensure data centers protect our electric grid, conserve our water, respect our neighborhoods, and pay their own way,” Abbott said in a statement. “They must not pass costs on to Texas families or interfere with their quality of life.”
Under the standards, data center developers are expected to pay for electric infrastructure associated with their p...

- Description
- For more than a year, residents in the Mission Ridge area of unincorporated El Paso County have been pushing for restrictions on commercial semi-truck parking, saying large trucks have been lining neighborhood streets and creating safety hazards.
Along Stamfordham Street, residents said semi-trucks have been parked on the residential street and have blocked visibility for drivers trying to turn or see oncoming traffic.
One resident called it “a pain and it's a hazard as far as I'm concerned,” saying that when making a turn, “there's a truck there that you just can't see the traffic.”
The resident also said, “It's just blocking the way and backing up is a pain,” describing a recent close call: “Some car just about hit me because the semis were in the way about a month and a half ago.”
Another resident said the trucks have been a long-running issue and that attempts to get help have been unsuccessful.

- Tightening its grip on a key maritime trade route, Iran issued a list of demands for the United States to meet before shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz can resume. All of the demands appear to be non-starters for the White House.
Iranian leaders said the United States must lift its blockade on Iranian ports, withdraw American forces surrounding Iran, lift sanctions, unfreeze Iranian assets, refrain from using insulting and threatening language toward Iran, and pay Iran for damages caused by the war.
In a social media post Monday, President Donald Trump said the last demand on that list was never brought up during past talks with Iran.
"But it is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous, as led initially by General Soleimani, including the families of those killed on the USS Cole, and tho...
