- KCPS hosted its annual all-staff Convocation starting at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31. However, this was a whole different experience due to COVID-19. For the first time ever, convocation went virtual and while we still maintained our commitment to our teachers and staff, we understand the 2020-2021 school year while be like no other. Despite the challenges laid out before us we continually strive to give us students the best education possible, no matter what.
The event featured a 2019 - 2020 school year, year in review video, a recap of our annual Summerfest event with a twist to it, and a sit-down interview with Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell conducted by Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Kelly. The interview, in particular, highlighted the steps KCPS to prepare for the upcoming school year but we also recognize the challenges we will face as the school year begins. However, we will be there to serve our students and their families, no matter what.

- Summerfest is an opportunity for school children of all ages to celebrate and prepare for the arrival of the new school year. This event features live entertainment, athletic competitions, educational games, and free food. In preparation for school, students have the opportunity to receive a free backpack, school supplies, athletic physicals, and immunizations. Summerfest is open to the community and includes a variety of community resources and children’s activities.
This year's Summerfest however, was a unique experience. Due to COVID-19, Summerfest could not be held in its original format. That did not stop us here at KCPS from continuing to assist our families and provide them with the services they need. Whether it was in the driving rain, or the blazing sun we are here for our families no matter what.

Kansas City Public Schools is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to reach families. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused adjustments to teaching and learning. Prompted by the need to help families engage in our public education system, KCPS is launching this new opportunity to assist all families to have access to continued quality education. In order to reach more students, KCPS will air academic content on KMCI 38 The Spot.
