Encouraged by the stars of reality shows and social media influencers, cosmetic surgery has for many young people become as common as tattoos. ‘Youngsters idealise their image’, says Dr Hervé Raspaldo, a French cosmetic surgeon. ‘If it wasn’t fashionable, nobody would do it’, admits Joana, a 21-year-old aspiring influencer who gets lip fillers in an effort to look more like the Instagram filters she uses. The market is booming, with both high-end specialized clinics and their low-cost counterparts just a plane ride away in Tunisia or Turkey. For some women, their body transformation process is part of a deeper quest for identity and self-esteem. ‘I’d been at odds with my body for years’, says Swan, who has had nearly ten surge...

- Iraq has held elections, its fifth since the US-led invasion in 2003 which overthrew Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The government has portrayed this early election as a change to fulfil public demand for change, but protesters now fear that the results will be neither free nor fair.

The election is Iraq’s first since widespread protests erupted in 2019, during which more than 600 people were killed by security forces and armed groups. Protesters have gathered in the lead-up to this vote, saying that the election process is corrupt, with paramilitary wings of incumbent parties attacking opposition supporters. Shi’ite cleric Moqtada Al Sadr’s party is expected to grow its share of seats and possibly control of the government. Iraq’s Shi’ite groups have dominated government formation since 2003, but a low voter turnout suggests the population h...

Across multiple regions of France and Switzerland, water is in short supply as water levels in rivers are decreasing. 'We can call it a Mediterraneanization of the climate', explains Mikhaël Schwander, Meteoswiss meteorologist. The impact is severe in the affected regions, and it's only getting worse. At first it was August, then July-August, now September too and soon maybe October', explains Dominique Retord, Mayor of Lect. He's referring to Elon Musk's next major project with his Aerospace company SpaceX: building a 120-metre spacecraft. The goal is for humans to travel beyond the moon, to Mars. Musk even wants to go as far as colonization. 'The objective [is] a self-sustaining city on Mars', explains Musk. The Starship has accrued a large fan following - but it also has its fair share of critics. This year, around 1,400 dolphins were killed as part of a traditional Faroese hunt in a single day, sparking division within the Faroese population. Politician Sjúrður Skaale is concerned that international outcry will impact the nation's fishing industry: 'we do not live by killing dolphins. We live by selling [fish] to the world'. But for whale-catcher Jens Jakub, the hunt is a part of Faroese identity: 'it has everything to do with community and feeling that you belong somewhere'. Yet, even some in support are conflicted: 'I can well understand that people think it is too much. But I can also see that of course we have to kill them', says Rói Olsen.

- Description
- Construction on Britain's second high speed railway line, HS2, began last year. HS2 has faced criticism for its impact on environment and wildlife. Activists are doing what they can to stop it.
Denham Country Park is a rare wetlands containing ancient trees. It is on HS2's route. ‘'Currently, they are trying to build a temporary bridge across this ford to make an access road', explains one activist. A young woman scales a tree to stop it from being cut down. 'If I get down, this tree's going to go today, you do realise that?' she says to a police woman negotiating with her. HS2 workers and private security firms clash with activists while police stand by. 'Who do you serve, who do you protect?', the activists chant, angry at the police for not intervening. Tree by tree, the fight against HS2 will go on, as the delayed project continues.

- LGBT Lose Rights in Poland: Poland's right-wing populist leader came to power last year decrying "LGBT ideology". As dozens of Polish municipalities enact 'LGBT ideology free zones', members of the gay community fear for their safety.
The Polish town of Pulawy is one of 50 municipalities that have publicly declared their opposition to LGBT 'ideology'. This opposition reflects the ruling Law and Justice party's insistence that LGBT identity is a toxic ideology which erodes 'traditional values'. 'Pulawy enacted a statement about stopping the ideology pushed forward by the LGBT subculture. So they are basically calling LGBT people a subculture and that this subculture has an ideology', explains LGBT activist David Socha. 'If we look on the map of Poland, it's one third of Poland which created discriminatory acts against the people', says activist Bart Staszewski. People have now been emboldened to carry out homophobic attacks. 'I've had my friends being called out, even physi...

Downie is still optimistic: 'I believe that it can be fixed'. Researchers like Emma Beckman are working to improve the process: 'Evidence-based classification systems are absolutely an imperative part of the future of the Paralympics'.

In just a few months, over 400 guns have been stolen from Swiss gun shops; robbers break in, loot the weapons, and then escape through mountain passes across the border into France. These guns end up in the hands of criminals who use them for armed robberies and hijacking cash-in-transit vans. Police are tracing how these weapons end up being sold on the dark web or used in as part of the inner workings of drug mafia circles. ‘Before, there were levels, gang members would steal scooters, then cars, then jewellery stores. Now, an offender who is unknown to the police could attack a van in Switzerland’, says Richard Schittly, a journalist who has investigated gangs in Ly...

- In South Korea, twenty-one delivery workers have died since the start of the pandemic. Many say it is caused by relentless work pressures and long hours, as delivery services compete to offer the fastest service.
Lee Seong Wook, a 44 year old delivery driver, works 6 days a week, and rarely sees his children. 'I'd be lying if I said it isn't tough for me. But it’s a matter of survival. My children won't eat if I don't earn', he explains. A colleague of Lee's recently fell into a coma following a brain haemorrhage; he had been working over 90 hours a week. Employees in fulfilment centres are also struggling. 'These people used their brains only to work out how to squeeze as much blood from the workers as possible, within the boundaries of the law', says the mother of one delivery centre employee who died of a heart attack. The government ruled his death was caused by 'overwork'. As the nation with the longest working hours in the developed world, overwork is a part of Sou...

Massoud is still the best hope secular Afghans have of evicting the Taliban and well aware he needs to hang on to the area.
