- Baseball is filled with history: stories and stats and lore dating back to the 1800’s. But Brad Lidge, a man with a firm place in Houston baseball history with the Houston Astros, has found a second life after his playing days ended, studying things from much, much further back. Brad Lidge pitched for the Astros from 2002 to 2007 and was a dominant closer. He earned the nickname “Lights Out Lidge,” because once he took the mound, it was lights out for the opposition. Lidge was part of the 2005 World Series team and, after he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, he recorded the final out in that team’s 2008 World Series victory. Since retiring from baseball, Lidge has found a second career in archaeology. He now has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the subject. He’s worked on archaeological digs at sites in Italy and he’ll begin a PhD program in the fall. He was also recently named to the board of advisors for the Penn Museum in Philadelphia. - Houston Mayor John Whitmire unveiled his proposed budget for the next fiscal year, pitching it as “a way to help the city avoid a major financial shortfall.” Houston City Controller Chris Hollins has raised concerns about the proposal and what it could mean for taxpayers and city services. Hollins says the new proposed trash fee doesn’t come close to paying for solid waste. He says the $5 trash fee will only generate $24 million, while the cost of solid waste today is closer to $120 million. Hollins believes the mayor’s plan is to drain the water fund to pay for trash and separately, draining the water fund even further to pay for police and firefighters with a transfer from the water fund over to the general fund.

The city said in an e-mail statement to the Dallas Morning News that it canceled the party “after further review and in the best interest” of the city. Gov. Abbott’s threat cited an early version of the flyer that advertised it as “Muslims only.” Knight told KERA News the goal of the event was to promote modesty and was never about excluding other faiths from the event. When faced with intriguing developments in the week's news, we turn to a panel of non-experts to parse the good, the bad, and the ugly of it all. A humanoid robot recently caused a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to San Diego to be delayed more than hour. An employee from Elite Event Robotics purchased a ticket for the 4-foot-tall, 70-pound robot named Bebop and brought it aboard a plane. Its presence caused the delay not because it was a robot, but because its aisle seat violated the airline’s policy for large carry-on items. So, Bebop was moved to a window seat. Then, Bebop’s lithium battery was found to be larger than the maximum allowed by Southwest Airlines policy. Once the battery was removed, the plane was finally able to depart. The company, which rents out its robots for appearances at various events, said Bebop will continue to fly commercial, but without its batteries installed...
