- A global team of astronomers, led by Harvard scientists, have captured an image of a black hole for the first time. The result of a massive, years-long effort by dozens of researchers, the Event Horizon Telescope focused on a pair of supermassive black holes – the one at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, known as Sagittarius A*, and a second that lies at the heart of an elliptical galaxy called M87. The work opens the door to allowing astronomers and physicists to put Einstein’s theories of gravity and general relativity to the test under the most extreme conditions in the universe.

- Description
- The United States spends more on health care per capita than other developed countries — much more. One recent paper estimated that U.S. costs were 25 percent higher than the next closest country. Recent polls have shown that reducing health care costs has emerged as one of the public’s top priorities for President Trump and the new Congress. Polls also show that health care costs are the leading pocketbook issue for families. To date, most discussion has been about prescription drug costs, but polling data suggest that the issue is likely to broaden as we approach the 2020 election to include debates on increasing government intervention vs. encouraging private sector competition to reduce costs. What might a divided Congress do? Drawing on a newly released poll by POLITICO and the Harvard Chan School, a panel of experts considered various solutions that have emerged to reduce health care costs.

- Description
- What does a sustainable and healthy future mean when it comes to food production, consumption and resulting environmental impacts? With nearly a billion people globally going hungry and nearly two billion eating the wrong food, the answer is pressing – especially as we look to a future that needs to sustainably feed “10 billion by 2050.” This Forum explored how to avert dire consequences for human and planetary health through best practices and new technologies. Key questions were how to amplify nutritious food production, prevent waste and secure supplies, while protecting our environment in the process. The discussion included the “planetary health diet” recently proposed by an international commission that emphasizes plant-based eating for better health and for minimal ecological impact.

Diversity training programs have had limited success, and individual effort alone often invites backlash. Behavioral design offers a new solution. By de-biasing organizations instead of individuals, we can make smart changes that have big impacts. Presenting research-based solutions, Iris Bohnet hands us the tools we need to move the needle in classrooms and boardrooms, in hiring and promotion, benefiting businesses, governments, and the lives of millions.

- Description
- Wyss Core Faculty member Samir Mitragotri, Ph.D. presented a talk at Le Laboratoire Cambridge on February 13th, 2019, titled Designing Future Therapeutics. Effective delivery of therapeutics is a major problem in today’s healthcare. At a fundamental level, the challenge of therapeutic delivery reflects the fact that the drug distribution in the body is limited by body’s natural metabolic processes and transport barriers. These biological barriers, while serving an important purpose of regulating body’s metabolic functions, limit the drug dose that ultimately reaches the target site. Accordingly, many drugs fail to reach their full therapeutic potential. We are developing a fundamental understanding of body’s key biological barriers and using this understanding to develop novel means to negotiate these barriers to deliver drugs. Samir Mitragotri presents an overview of the lessons learned from his exploration of these biological barriers.

However, in startling contrast, deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth doubled in the United States between 2000 and 2014, putting the nation second-to-last in maternal mortality among countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Further, pernicious racial disparities mean that black women in the United States face a deeply distressing three- to four-times higher risk of pregnancy-related deaths. What factors are driving these increases and disparities? What changes will narrow the survival gap between white and black women? How can health care systems more effectively prevent complications and poor outcomes? And how can mothers themselves and their communities be agents for change for a more equitable and safe delivery of the next generation?
