Maybe FIFA can still bring peace to the Middle East?
Arrests of senior FIFA officials a few days before vote on expulsion of Israel from international football association is certainly fodder for conspiracy theories.
Poor Jibril Rajoub, the disgraced former Palestinian security chief. He had a brief renaissance with his bid to expel Israel from international football at the FIFA Congress this week. But with Wednesday morning's revelations of arrests of senior FIFA officials and simultaneous U.S. and Swiss investigations into endemic corruption in the global organization's affairs, including allegations of vote-buying in the bid process where Russia and Qatar were awarded the rights to host the next World Cup, no-one is interested in h...

Israel may soon be forced to ask itself: How to behave in post-Assad Syria?
The bigger picture is gradually becoming clear: After almost a year of a relative stalemate, the Assad regime is retreating on multiple fronts.
By Amos Harel
In a speech on Sunday to mark the 15th anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from south Lebanon, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah termed the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, “a danger second to none in history.” The previous day, he said Hezbollah was fighting an existential threat to Lebanon and the entire Arab world, warning that if Syria’s Sunni rebels succeeded in topping the Assad regime, they would perpe...

President Rivlin to Ethiopian Israelis: We've failed to listen to you
Prime Minister Netanyahu meets Ethiopian-Israeli soldier whose pummeling by police sparked protets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
President Reuven Rivlin attempted Monday to address claims of racism and police brutality against Israel's Ethiopian community after two demonstrations by the group and their supporters grew violent and ended in riots and clashes with police.
Rivlin said Israel must look upon the "open and bloody wound" which the protests in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem revealed. He made the comments during a meeting with the local leaders from Israel's ultra-Orthodox community.

Dozens injured in Ethiopian-Israeli protest against police brutality in Tel Aviv
Police take harsh action against protesters hurling rocks and bottles; earlier, thousands blocked roads in rally against police violence and racism.
Clashes erupted in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square on Sunday as thousands of people gathered to protest police brutality toward Israeli Jews of Ethiopian descent.
Dozens of people were injured, many of them police officers. Police made 43 arrests. Later, police stated that 56 police officers were lightly wounded in the protest, and one was moderately wounded.
Police fired stun grenades and tear gas while some protesters tried to break into the Tel Aviv City Hall, located at the square. Other protesters hurled rocks, planks and plast...

Baltimore protesters stage 'victory rally' after officers charged in Freddie Gray death
Chants of 'no justice, no peace, no racist police' echo through streets of Baltimore, in a march expected to draw at least 10,000.
Chants of "no justice, no peace, no racist police" echoed through the streets of Baltimore Saturday during a march that organizers billed as a "victory rally" a day after a prosecutor charged six officers involved in the arrest of a black man who died in police custody.
State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby on Friday charged the six with felonies ranging from assault to murder in the death of Freddie Gray. He died from spinal injuries a week after his April 12 arrest. It provoked riots on the streets of West Baltimore and quickly became a...

Ousted Egyptian President Morsi sentenced to 20 years in prison
This is the first ruling against the Muslim Brotherhood leader since the army toppled him in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.
By The Associated Pres and Jack Khoury
An Egyptian criminal court on Tuesday sentenced ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison over the killing of protesters in 2012, the first verdict to be issued against the country's first freely elected leader.
The ruling, which can be appealed, reflects the dramatic downfall of Morsi and the drastic challenges facing Egypt since its 2011 uprising that forced longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak from power.
