- For over a century, the rhythm of Makoko was written on the water. It was a world built on stilts—a floating city where children learned to paddle before they could walk, and the horizon was a forest of wooden masts.
But the tide is finally going out. What generations of families called home is being reclaimed by the city it helped build.
The landscape is changing. Where there were once vibrant markets on canoes, there is now open water and debris. Thousands who have known no other life but the waterfront are now untethering their boats, watching a century of history drift away in the wake of urban expansion.
On the outskirts, families gather what remains. Roofing sheets are sold as scrap; memories are packed into narrow hulls. There is no anger in their eyes today—only the quiet, heavy realization that an era has reached its horizon.
Lagos moves forward, stretching toward a modern skyline of concrete and g...

- Description
- The death of the 21-month-old son of award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has triggered a nationwide investigation into medical practices at a private Lagos hospital, raising serious questions about patient safety, professional accountability, and healthcare regulation in Nigeria.
On January 7, 2026, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, lost their son, Nkanu Nnamdi, after he was treated at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos following a brief illness.
In a statement confirming the loss, the family described the death as devastating and asked for privacy. Days later, however, the tragedy took a legal turn.
According to a formal legal notice served on Euracare Hospital and some of its medical staff, the family alleges that medical lapses during diagnostic procedures directly contributed to the child’s death.

- The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced it will resume a nationwide strike from Monday, January 12, 2026, after the Federal Government failed to fully implement previously agreed welfare and service demands.
The planned action, tagged TICS 2.0: “No Implementation, No Going Back, will begin at 12 midnight, unless the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities meet key agreements on arrears, allowances, and working conditions.
NARD’s warning comes weeks after it suspended a 29-day nationwide strike that began on November 1, 2025, following a memorandum of understanding with the government.
The suspension was intended to provide a four-week window for implementing its 19-point demands, but leaders say there has been no substantial progress.
This latest move marks one of several industrial actions by NARD in recent months, including a five-day warning strike in September 2025 and the extended indefinite ac...

- Description
- As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco enters the high-stakes knockout phase, controversy has erupted around Nigeria's Super Eagles camp.
Head coach Éric Chelle imposed a strict media blackout on training sessions for three consecutive days leading up to the Round of 16 match against Mozambique.
Journalists covering the tournament, many of whom traveled to Morocco at great personal expense, were barred from attending sessions or interviewing players.
Some described the restrictions as unprofessional, highlighting limited access compared to more open teams like hosts Morocco and Senegal.
But in Sunday's pre-match press conference, Coach Chelle stood firm in his defense.
He explained that AFCON rules permit only one open training session per week for media.
Yet, out of respect for Nigerian journalists, he had generously allowed two during the group stage.
"This is not against you," Chelle st...

- Description
- In a significant shift for the nation’s workforce, the Federal Government has officially moved to make pre-employment drug testing mandatory for all prospective applicants seeking positions within the federal public service.
This directive, issued through a service-wide circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, marks a decisive escalation in the administration's efforts to combat substance abuse. While drug testing has historically been a requirement for high-security "Testing Designated Positions" (TDPs), this new policy expands the net, making a clean drug screen a core prerequisite for entry into all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
The government cites three primary drivers for this mandate:
* National Security: Addressing concerns that substance abuse can compromise internal security and leave employees vulnerable to coercion.
* Workplace Efficiency: Aiming to insulate the public service from...

- Description
- In a move described as a "competitiveness shock" for the region, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially announced a sweeping fiscal reform to dismantle the high cost of air travel.
Effective January 1, 2026, all member states are mandated to eliminate non-aviation taxes and significantly reduce service charges. For decades, West Africa has held the unenviable title of the most expensive region for air travel globally—where taxes can account for up to 70% of a single ticket’s price.
The decision follows a decade of research confirming that prohibitive costs have stifled the ECOWAS mission of free movement. Under the current system, a trader traveling from Lagos to Dakar might pay upwards of $3,000 for a ticket, much of which is composed of "disguised taxation" like solidarity fees and tourism levies.
Director of Transport and Telecommunications, Chris Appiah, noted that these charges violate the International Civ...
