The newly readopted anthem, 'Nigeria We Hail Thee' written by Lillian John Williams and composed by Frances Breda was initially used from independence in 1960 until 1978 when a rise-old compatriot was adopted. Meanwhile, this transition has been met with mixed reactions.

- It was a moment of jubilation on Friday in Kano as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially issued Muhammadu Sanusi II a letter of appointment at the Government House.
Amid a mammoth crowd of government functionaries, traditional and religious rulers, and well-wishers filling the symbolic African House to the brim, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was present.
Before reaffirming him as the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Governor Yusuf revealed that Sanusi would lead the Friday congregation prayers at the Government House and subsequently return to the palace, where he would henceforth resume traditional duties.
