It was the testiest and most uncomfortable remark at a typically freewheeling and chaotic presidential press conference.
But it was quickly followed by laughter across the packed room: the guffaws coming as if a pressure valve had been released in Australian government and diplomatic circles.
A half-hour later, following a remarkably drama-free and warm meeting between Trump and the Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, Rudd was heard to apologise to the president, leaning over the table to say sorry to the man he called a “village idiot” four years ago.

After an Australian reporter asks the president about Rudd’s previous remarks, Trump replies, saying: 'I don’t know anything about him. If he said bad, then maybe he’d like to apologise.' Turning to Albanese, Trump in a half-joking tone, asks: 'Did an ambassador say something bad about me? Don't tell me. Where is he? Is he still working for you?' Albanese looks up and extends his finger across the table, just off to the right of Trump: 'He’s right there.'

More than 280 posties have been injured in the last year, with many needing hospital treatment and time off work, while some are suffering psychological trauma. New data shows that the postal service's slightly larger electric delivery vehicles [eDVs] provide more protection than motorcycles, with Australia Post saying it will move to speed up the replacement of its motorcycle fleet with eDVs. Australia Post's general manager of safety, Russell Munro, said the corporation will take measures to protect its workforce but called out ‘unsafe driver behaviour’ that is putting posties at risk.

Gym bros carrying huge buckets and shovels, families with little kids, old aunties, shop keepers descended on the tourist town of Guangfu, days after typhoon sent millions of tonnes of mud and water crashing through its streets.
In late September, the outer bands of Typhoon Ragasa dumped torrential rain on Taiwan’s Hualien county, and burst a barrier lake in the Matai’an river. The lake, formed by a landslide in July, had been under constant monitoring and authorities had expected it would overflow, but it exceeded expectations. More than 15.4m tonnes of water came down, blasting a tsunami of thick sludge into Guangfu.
Days later trains packed with volunteers arrived, in their tens of thousands, ready to help. Stephen Byrne spoke with Guardian foreign correspondent Helen Davidson in Taiwan, who witnessed the cleanup first...
