- What does the Coalition get wrong about net zero?
- Date posted
- Description
- When Coalition MPs say that Australia’s emissions don’t matter because they’re only 1% of global emissions, what they rarely say is what that means for international climate agreements that Australia has signed up to.
Subscribe to Guardian Australia on YouTube and hit the bell to see new videos ► http://bit.ly/gdnaustraliasubs
Under the Paris climate agreement, countries must come up with their own pledges – known as a National Determined Contribution – that collectively meet a global goal of keeping global heating “well below 2C” and aim for 1.5C.s
If you create a group with Australia at the top and include every country with emissions lower than ours, then all those countries contribute 28.4% of global emissions, very close to China’s emissions of 29.2%.
Stephen Byrne spoke with Guardian Australia's environment and climate correspondent Graham Readfearn.

- UN commission finds that Israel is committing genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza
- Date posted
- Description
- A United Nations commission has determined that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza since October 2023, with the “intent to destroy the Palestinians” in the territory.
The independent commission cites the killing of civilians and children in a “scorched-earth military strategy”, starvation and deaths caused by restrictions on food and medicines, mistreatment of detainees, forced displacement and the physical devastation of much of the territory.
It’s head, Navi Pillay, says all “all states are under a legal obligation to use all means that are reasonably available to them to stop the genocide in Gaza”.
“When clear signs and evidence of genocide emerge, the absence of action to stop it amounts to complicity.”
Israel has rejected the report and called for the commission to be abolished.
