He takes his art to an epic extreme, writing on a long scroll spread out on the ground with a big brush. - Patrick Davison is striking out stereotypes about old age in “Balloon Elderly,” a documentary about a slow-pitch softball team in Hongodai, Japan, made up mostly of men over 70. In Davison’s mind, these men embody the definition of the Japanese word ikigai, which roughly translates to “reason for being.”
“I was inspired by this idea and how the Balloon Elderly found some of their ikigai in the friendship and camaraderie of the team and in the game of softball,” he says. “They liked winning as much as anyone, but it didn’t seem to be their main motivation. They truly cared about each other, and they tried to make the team a place where everyone was supported through the struggles of aging.”

- Budapest’s skyline is full of buildings topped with colorful tile. It graces the roofs of iconic structures like Great Market Hall and Matthias Church, which required five railway wagons full of roof tiles delivered to the construction site. These tiles were all manufactured right in Hungary at the Zsolnay Porcelain Factory. The company, founded in 1853, started making the roof tile beloved by architects in the 1860s. István Komor, operating director of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, takes us on a tour of the factory, which produces the famous tile to this day.

- Three mornings a week, rain or shine, Back on My Feet members and volunteers gather before sunrise. Erica is one of the group’s volunteer morning run leaders. Back on My Feet is a national organization that incorporates running into its training and employment program, with a goal to end homelessness in 13 major cities in the United States. Erica is giving back by running with people who are working hard to get their lives together. For her, it’s a win-win because she is getting so much in return. Erica was relatively new to running a few years ago, but today, she runs marathons. She thanks the people she is helping through Back on My Feet for helping to propel her to achieve her goals. “We’re all equals,” she says. “We’re all teammates.”

That said, most people carry a makhila in peace, or display the beautifully-crafted object in their homes. Liza Bergara is the seventh generation in her family to make makhilas at her family’s shop is in the French Basque country. Wood for the walking sticks comes is harvested from medlar trees planted by her great-grandfather. A makhila is typically bestowed upon someone to mark an achievement, and French president Emmanuel Macron, Charlie Chaplin and Pope John Paul II are among the celebrated people who have been honored with them.
