Ítalo Antonio Gallo Serrano and his son Ítalo Gallo Jr. build these cultural treasures together in their workshop. It’s a family tradition that goes back nearly 40 years.

That’s the lesson filmmaker David Freid learned when he arrived in Cuba to shoot a lighthearted film. He had planned to shed light on a potential deal for the island nation to pay off a financial debt owed to the Czech Republic with rum—loads of Cuban rum. But interview subjects backed out at the last minute, and Freid was warned the government might be surveilling him. He could have soured on the project. But the unstoppable Freid switched gears and made “This Film Used to Be About Rum.”

But for many transracial families, especially those where Black children are adopted by non-Black parents, hair care becomes a point of struggle. Many non-Black parents find that their unfamiliarity with their children’s natural hair leaves their kids at a disadvantage. That’s where Tamekia Swint comes in. As the founder and executive director of the non-profit Styles 4 Kidz, she is creating a space for parents to learn how to care for their children’s hair without judgment or negative criticism.

- Everyone’s buzzing about Bioni. He’s a British beekeeper and producer making electronic music incorporating the sounds of bees. You can’t really bring bees into a recording studio, of course. They’d swarm the mic. So Bioni records the insects buzzing in their hives using homemade equipment. He extracts samples from the recordings and data, and processes the sounds through his Hive Synthesizer, which uses honey as an organic electrical resistor. People at music festivals all around the world can dance to Bioni’s beats and learn about colony collapse disorder at the same time. Bees have been dying at an alarming rate, and we need to save these pollinators if agriculture is to survive.

The camera was placed on the turtle’s back by biologist Nathan Robinson and his team at the Cape Eleuthera Institute. These scientists are hoping that the information gathered from this study will help protect turtles around the world. And, don’t worry, the device is completely harmless. After a couple hours, it pops off the turtle’s back and floats to the surface of the ocean. Nathan will be joining us to answer all your questions about these incredible creatures. So ask away!

- From the 19-ton Savoyarde at the Sacré-Coeur in Paris to replicas of the Liberty Bell that can be found all over the United States, the Paccard family has been making bells since 1796. There are currently three generations of Paccards working side-by-side at the Paccard Fonderie des Cloches in Annecy, France. It’s hard, physical labor. But the Paccards, including 16-year-old Clement, are dedicated to keeping this tradition alive. We visit one of the last remaining bell foundries in the world to see how the Paccards make bronze bells and tune them to perfection.
