- Today was 27 preschoolers were the first to attend Grand Island Northwest preschool in Chapman. Previously, the school had been in Lockwood and St. Libory. Principal Jeff Ellsworth said there are many advantages to having the school in Chapman, and the staff is excited to be a part of the Chapman school system.

Mayor Jeremy Jensen, City Administrator Marlan Ferguson, library director Steve Fosselman, library board president Ed Meedel and library staff helped break ground near the front of the library during a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday. Jensen broke ground with a shovel used by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1903 for the groundbreaking of the Carnegie Library.

- Adams Central’s Sophia Conant was selected as this week’s Athlete of the Week because of her performance last week at the Grand Island Central Catholic Howard Schumann Invite. The senior has ran the 3,200 in almost every meet she’s competed in, but at this invite she ran the 800, the 1,600, the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay.
Conant claimed the 800 (2:27.52), the 1,600 (5:33.68) and joined Caitlin Tibbs, Jayna Stroh and Hannah Lonowski on the winning 1,600 relay (4:23.08). She also joined Tibbs, Grace Reiman and Karis Huyser on the 3,200 relay that finished second (10:27.89). For her efforts, Conant was also named the girls track athlete of the meet. That also helped the Patriots take the girls title with 134 points, 36 more than runner-up Wood River.

Prososki, a sophomore on the No. 1 ranked Class D-2 team, scored 25 points in the game against Wynot. In the semifinal game against Mullen, he scored 22 points. In the final against Falls City Sacred Heart, Prososki scored 23 points. Riverside took runner-up in the tournament, losing in the final 59-42.

Fiddelke, a junior guard, scored 32 points in the first round of the Class C-2 tournament against North Platte. In the semifinal round against Hastings St. Cecilia, Fiddelke had four assists and scored 15 points. In the final against Superior, Fiddelke scored 13 points. The Bluejays took second in a loss to Superior of 42-39.

- Grand Island Senior High swimmer Jonathan Novinski was selected as this week’s Athlete of the Week because of his performance last week at the Nebraska state swim meet. Novinski, a freshman student at Grand Island Central Catholic, won his first state gold medal at the meet. The GISH swimmer won gold in the 500-yard freestyle with an eight second lead on the second place finisher. He was the first freshman to win the event since 2005. Novinski also took third place in the 200 freestyle and was the only freshman in the final. He also was part of 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay teams which finished in 11th, 14th and 15th places. That was the first time in program history all three boys relays made it the second day of the meet.
