- The Journey of Hope bicycle team rolled into Grand Island for the 32nd annual year! Hosted by The Arc of Central Nebraska, the Journey of Hope is a cross country bicycle riding event that begins its’ trek in Napa, California, and 63 days and over 4,000 miles later ends in Washington D.C. The Ability Experience was founded in 1977 as the national philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity with the purpose of instilling lifelong service in its members and enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities. Every year, three teams of bicycle riders, in an event known as the Journey of Hope, ride across the United States to bring awareness to communities across the country of people with disabilities.

This years profits went to the Grand Generation Center. For the sixth time in 11 years, Grand Island's own Jason Cornelius won the contest with 13 dogs eaten in ten minutes. A total of 15 contestants downed 107 coney dogs this year.

- The Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighter’s Association (NSVFA), in collaboration with the State Fire Marshal’s Training Division, held the 88th Annual Nebraska Fire School Friday in Grand Island. The event was once again hosted at the Heartland Events Center and Fonner Park Campus, as well as various sites throughout Grand Island. The Fire School offers 33 comprehensive classes covering all phases of firemanship, fire investigation, rescue, fire safety, leadership, officer training, fire prevention and emergency medical services. The Nebraska Fire School has been a cornerstone of firefighter education since its inception in 1937, providing essential training and fostering camaraderie among Nebraska's firefighting community. With approximately 85% of Nebraska’s firefighters serving as volunteers, the Fire School plays a vital role in equipping them with the skills necessary to protect their communities.

Vakiner pitched six innings, gave up only one hit with one run while having a career-high 11 strikeouts during the Kernels’ 11-1 win over Falls City on Thursday This season, Vakiner sports a 6-0 record with a 1.75 ERA, in nine appearances giving up only 13 hits, eight runs, 16 walks, while striking out 57 batters on the year for the Central City/Centura, which qualified to the Class C state baseball tournament. The Kernels will play St. Paul/Palmer at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fricke Field.

- This week’s Grand Island Independent athlete of the week is Northwest’s Kyra Ray. The Viking senior was named the outstanding girls athlete of the Grand Island Independent Central Nebraska Track and Field Championships on Monday at Northwest High School. Ray won three events, which included long jump (18-1 1/2), the 100 (12.22) and ran anchor on the winning girls 400 relay (49.49). She also finished second in the girls pole vault (a personal-best 11-4). She is returning state medalist in all those events, including two in the pole vault and has helped the Vikings medal in the 400 relay in each of her seasons. Ray will run track and field at Washburn after high school.

The Viking senior scored her 100th career goal during Northwest’s 10-0 win over Crete during the Central Conference Tournament this past Thursday. She also scored three goals in the victory. On Monday in the semifinals against Seward, she scored a goal to help the Vikings win 4-0 to move into the championship game later in the day. She scored a goal during a 7-1 win over Lexington, helping the Northwest win the Central Conference Tournament for the fourth-straight season. She also scored three goals during their 10-0 win over Schuyler on Tuesday. She has 21 goals on the season.

One was a three-run homer and the other a grand slam. Gorecki knocked in seven runs in the 9-1 victory. His seven RBI's is a new team record for one game. In the second game Gorecki hit a solo home run for another RBI amassing 8 total for the day.
