The Northwest senior bowler finished fourth in the Class B girls singles tournament this past Monday and helped the Vikings capture the Class B state championship on Tuesday. She came up with a key spare in the first game of the Class B state championship against Elkhorn. That helped Northwest win the first game and won the match 3-2.

- Anyia Roberts, Grand Island Senior High wrestling: The Grand Island Senior High senior picked up two big wins during the NSWCA Girls state duals on Thursday in going 3-0 on the day. First, Roberts, ranked No. 2 at 155 pounds scored a last-second takedown to defeat No. 3 Rowyn Wiltgen 5-3 during Grand Island’s 51-27 loss to Millard South in the semifinals, then posted an 11-3 win over top-ranked Zoey Barber of Omaha Westside in the third-place dual, where Grand Island lost 36-35. Barber had defeated Roberts twice this season. Roberts is currently 27-2 on the season and is the defending state champion at 155 pounds.

- This week’s Grand Island Independent athletes of the week Heartland Lutheran High School basketball players Abigail Uden and Luke Olson. Sophomore Abigail Uden was chosen for helping her team capture third place at the Goldenrod Conference Tournament in Greeley on Saturday. During the three games of the tournament, Uden scored 25 points, had 9 rebounds, six steals, and six assists. That includes her 14 point performance against Central Valley in the consolation game to help her team win third place. It’s the first time in 15 years Heartland Lutheran girls have even reached the conference semi-finals. Freshman Luke Olson set a new single game school scoring record with 37 against Elba in the first round of the Goldenrod Conference Tournament on Jan. 18. Olson averages 14.7 points a game for the Red Hornets in just his freshman season.

- This week’s Grand Island Independent athlete of the week is Grand Island Senior High swimmer Lily Wilson. She was part of four wins for the Islanders at the Gene Cotter Invite on Saturday. All of her times were automatic state qualifying times. She won the 200 freestyle at 1:59.78 and the 500 freestyle at 5:25.12. She took part of both the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay wins. The 200 freestyle relay won at 1:42.90 and the 400 freestyle relay won at 3:48.12. Those efforts helped the Islander girls finish fourth at the meet. Wilson earned state medals in the 200 freestyle relay (fifth) and 400 freestyle relay (sixth) in last year’s state meet. Wilson and the Islanders will compete in a dual with Fremont on Thursday.

- This week’s Grand Island Independent of the week is St. Paul junior Alex Meinecke. The Wildcat 175-pounder defeated defending champion and No. 1-rated Wyatt Tramp of Crofton-Bloomfield twice in two days. Meinecke got the first win over Tramp in a 9-5 decision in the St. Paul Duals to help the Wildcats go 3-1 and win their home tournament on Friday. Meinecke went 4-0 in the four duals St. Paul wrestled in. Meinecke then defeated Tramp 13-9 in the finals of the Central City Invite on Saturday. Meinecke is a two-time state qualifier and a returning state medalist, where he finished fifth at 157 last year. Meinecke, rated No. 2 is now 21-0 on the season.

He scored 19 points in a 72-46 win over North Platte St. Patrick’s on Friday, then scored 21 points in a 60-31 victory over Minden in the championship. GICC is now 6-2 on the season. Liban and the Crusaders play at Seward Saturday.

- Grand Island Senior High wrestler Hudson Oliver is this week’s Grand Island Independent athlete of the week after his performance at the two-day Council Bluffs Classic this past weekend.
The Islander senior went 8-0 and dominated the out-of-state meet with four pins, a major decision, a forfeit victory and two technical falls at the meet, including an 18-3 technical fall over North Scott’s Trey Feist in the final. That effort helped Grand Island finish second at the meet.
Oliver is a two-time state medalist and is currently 15-0 on the season. Oliver and the Islanders will be back in action at the two-day Flatwater Fracas at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island.

The Bison senior had three interceptions on defense, along with five tackles on defense, and also caught three passes for 33 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass from Parker Zikmund during their 29-12 win over Sidney in the Class C-1 state semifinals last Friday. On the season, Truman has 33 tackles and six interceptions on defense and has caught 18 passes for 310 yards with six touchdown receptions. Ryan and the Central City football team will play Wahoo in the Class C-1 state championship game at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
