- A Fort Worth senior living community whose unsanitary conditions were reported on by the Fort Worth Report in August is again facing the possibility of a utility shutoff.
On Aug. 19, residents of Manor Independent Living, an apartment community for older adults in the Las Vegas Trail neighborhood of Fort Worth, showed the Report trash piled into empty units. The practice started, they said, after garbage collections ceased due to unpaid bills. Residents spoke of pests, leaks, broken elevators and an end to meal services and activities.
A nonprofit organization, Homeless Military Veterans, became involved in the property’s management in August.
When the Fort Worth Report returned to the property Sept. 24, trash was no longer stacked in vacant units. A bulletin board advertised activities. But fungus grew from the carpet in a first floor hallway. Water dripped from the ceiling into a bucket in one spot. In another, missing ceiling tiles revealed w...

- A little orange ball has taken Myles Turner around the world.
It’s bounced him from Bedford to the University of Texas at Austin, through a decade with the Indiana Pacers and now to the Milwaukee Bucks. But Turner told Hurst-Euless-Bedford trustees that basketball has always brought him back to the place he calls home.
“Somehow I always found myself back in HEB,” Turner said.
Now — just 12 years after he graduated — the district where Turner grew up and learned the game will put his name on the arena where another kid could start a journey of their own.

- The H Mart Asian supermarket set to open at Loop 820 and North Beach Street in Haltom City is closer to reality for the throngs of anticipating foodies, as crews Friday installed the store’s sign on the building.
“They still are very confident that they’re going to open prior to Thanksgiving,” Robert Briggs, economic development director for the city, told the Fort Worth Report.
Twenty-two tenants in the center are operating, including three that are in soft opening, Briggs said. Twenty-three are yet to open. Once it’s fully operating and stabilized, the city projects $1.1 million in gross sales tax collections annually from the center, he said.

Firefighters, police officers and city staff gathered to remember those who died or were involved in rescue efforts at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on Flight 93, which was hijacked as part of the coordinated attacks and crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, having never reached its intended target.
Mayor Mattie Parker stood in front of a collage of pictures, borrowed from Tunnel to Towers, of people who lost their lives on 9/11.
“Let today be a remembrance, a reminder of what it means to truly be American, to hold hands and look forward together, even when we disagree,” Parker said.

- Tarrant County commissioners voted 3-2 Tuesday to approve a list of polling sites for the November elections that included 92 fewer sites than the 2022 midterms.
The approval came after commissioners heard testimony from more than 100 speakers, the majority of whom were opposed to the site cuts, during a meeting that lasted over eight hours. Voting rights advocates and representatives of 30 civic groups rallied outside the county courthouse Tuesday morning, demanding that commissioners approve a list with the same number of sites as the 2022 midterms.
The adopted list includes 224 sites for Election Day and 47 for early voting. The 2022 list included 316 Election Day sites and 50 for early voting.

- City leaders gave the green light to a site plan for the $10 billion data center that has for months garnered criticism and backlash from southeast Fort Worth residents.
Fort Worth City Council voted 7-4 Tuesday for an amended site plan that accounts for 187 acres of the project headed by Black Mountain.
The language in the plan presented in Tuesday’s docket requested the addition of an electrical substation, a maximum building height increase to 70 feet and a maximum distance requirement of 150 feet between the facility and homes.
At the requests of council members Michael Crain and Chris Nettles, the vote was made to approve the site plan and amend the zoning item’s language to reflect a maximum distance of 300 feet between homes and the data center.

- A Fort Worth Report analysis found Fort Worth ISD students at 53 schools will have new principals on Aug. 10. The change marks the FWISD’s highest principal turnover in more than a decade and comes as the district begins its first school year under a state takeover.
The Report analyzed 11 years of school directories obtained through an open records request.
“Yes, people come in and come out,” said Khristina Goady, Jean McClung Middle School principal. “But our community remains, and every kid deserves to have an outstanding education, and that does not change because we have a change in leadership.”
