- Description
- After the final of this year's Women’s Football World Cup was marred by an incident involving an unwanted kiss, MEPs will question representatives of the European Commission on how the EU can help to counter violence and discrimination in sports.
During the trophy presentation for the Fifa Women’s World Cup in August, Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish football federation, kissed Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips, which she has stated she did not consent to. Rubiales initially refused to resign and was suspended by Fifa (the international governing body of association football), which launched an investigation into his conduct.
Parliament previously urged sports bodies and public authorities to effectively tackle discrimination, violence and hate speech and to guarantee safe, inclusive sport for all athletes, spectators and staff in sports venues and online.
