Depuis son adoption le 4 novembre 1950, la Convention européenne des droits de l'homme a été complétée par plusieurs protocoles qui ont ajouté des droits et libertés au texte initial. Par sa jurisprudence, la Cour a été amenée à interpréter les droits et libertés définis dans la Convention. Elle en a fait un instrument vivant capable de s'appliquer à des situations inexistantes et inconcevables à l'époque de sa rédaction. Par son interprétation, la Cour fait de la Convention un texte résolument moderne, de manière à s'adapter aux sujets de société actuels.
