Spanish MEP Juan López Aguilar just returned from a visit to Zaatari, a refugee camp in Jordan, about 12 kilometres from the Syrian border, hosting almost 100,000 Syrian refugees.

"It is about the end of the regime, in a fight for life or death," he says.

Earlier this week, the EU renewed its sanctions on Syria and extended an arms embargo. On the same day, UN investigators said Syrian leaders should be brought before the international criminal court (ICC) to face justice for murder and torture.

This resolution was dissed by President Dmitry Medvedev at a EU- Russia summit before Christmas with Medvedev telling the European Parliament to keep it's nose out of Russia's business. The Chair of the European Parliament's EU-Russia committee is German Socialiast MEP Knut Fleckenstein. He refused to sign the resolution claiming that the EU should not always hone in on the inner situation in Russia. "Medvedev is not obliged to do what the EU advices", he says.

One protester said the law could mean that internet providers would be able to take control of people's internet consumption and even stop their connection. That is why he spent hours chanting "No to acta, yes to rights" in minus temperatures. Protesters called especialy on the European Parliament to examine the potential impact on internet privacy and trade in generic medicines when debating the dossier. The European Parliament must approve the treaty for it to become law. A vote is expected before the summer.
