Amanda had to face the prospect of early menopause because of her cancer treatments. Doctors told her to freeze her eggs to preserve her fertility, but her insurance wouldn't cover the cost.

Rice founded The Chick Mission, a non-profit that lobbies for legislation to force insurance companies to cover the cost. They've been successful in 6 states and are now focused on California.

A hearing on Sen. Anthony Portantino's bill is scheduled for August 14th at 9AM.

In the meantime, they're raising funds for scholarships to help cancer patients pay to freeze their eggs and sperm. Their first "chick mission babies" are about to be born.

Newsom said a recent comprehensive study of mass shooters showed they all had one thing in common: problems as kids.

"Early childhood traumas that disproportionately impacted those young people’s lives. That alone should be cause for consideration and cause for celebration for the state of California doing more than any other state in America."

The Governor said he's broadly supportive of more than a dozen new gun control measures being considered by the state legislature.

But, he's also focused on better enforcement on the laws already on the books.

Newsom said this legal aid will help in the multi-faceted efforts to end homelessness.

"We've focused a lot on production, we haven't done enough on prevention. Today is an effort to acknowledge that in a very, very significant way."

The funding comes from a $20 billion settlement paid out by mortgage companies partly responsibile for the economy's collapse. That was negotiated in 2012.
