- US Apache helicopter crash near Hormuz triggers new escalation | DW News
- Runtime
- 18:36
- Date posted
- Description
- Fresh US and Iranian strikes have raised new questions about whether a fragile ceasefire can survive. The latest escalation began after a US Army Apache helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz. Washington says the aircraft collided with an Iranian drone before crashing into the sea. The United States responded with strikes on Iranian military targets, while Iran launched attacks targeting sites linked to US forces in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
In this interview, military analyst Sascha Bruchmann explains the significance of the Apache incident, the risks facing US forces operating around the Strait of Hormuz, and whether the latest exchanges represent a dangerous escalation or a controlled cycle of retaliation. The discussion also examines Iran's warning that the United States should "leave our region if you want to be safe," the role of Gulf states hosting American military bases, and the prospects for diplomacy amid continuing military action.

- Description
- While the world focuses on China's rise, Japan has been quietly boosting its own strategic importance in Asia. Japan is now updating its defense policy to counter China, and increasing its military spending. But thanks to careful diplomacy, it has managed to gain trust with other small and middle powers. We speak to Robert Ward, Senior Fellow and Japan Chair at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and author of the book Evaluating Japan's New Strategy. He explains how Japan is building its defense muscles without needing to flex them. Taiwan plays a big part, with Japan increasingly concerned about China's ambitions over the island, which lies just kilometers away from its own claimed territory. He says the recent unreliability of the US is pushing Japan to step up, and drawing other nations to its side.

But the US president and his anti-migrant policies have again clouded the world's biggest sports event with concerns about human rights. And FIFA is right in the middle of it. FIFA's President Gianni Infantino claims politics should stay out of sports, but also wore a MAGA cap, gave Trump a so-called FIFA Peace Prize' and joined his Board of Peace. Now, as millions travel to North America and billions watch on TV, we look beyond the glamor of the game to look at the Trump effect on the World Cup. - German FM calls on all sides to avoid more violence | DW News
- Runtime
- 1:05
- Date posted
- Description
- Germany's foreign minister Johann Wadephul has again called for a cessation of violence between Iran and Israel. He said willingness to negotiate was the path to long-term regional peace.
Iran had struck Israel late Sunday, pointing to “repeated violations” of the ceasefire in Lebanon by Israeli forces. Israel struck back, Iran in turn responded with more attacks. On Monday afternoon Iran's military leadership declared its attacks against Israel over.
Israel and Lebanon had agreed last week on a renewed attempt to implement a ceasefire. One condition was that Hezbollah — classified as a terror organization by several entities — completely halt its attacks on Israel. The militia was not involved in the ceasefire talks, flatly rejected the agreement and continued attacking Israel.
