- Description

- Description
- Not all children have the same opportunities, some go to school and others do not. Nor do they attend the same school as their non-Roma neighbours. School is our life, say the Roma children of Sofades, in Greece. Some parents agree. Their communities live in several European countries, to which they emigrated centuries ago. And when they no longer know what to do to prevent discrimination against their children in school, they turn to the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights as a last resort. Roma parents have taken this step in two countries: in Greece, in 2009 and 2010, and in Croatia in 2003. They filed a case against their country in order to have their children accepted in public schools and not confined to Roma-only schools. The Court ruled in their favour, in 2010 against Croatia and in 2013 against Greece. We visited these two countries to see how the judgments have helped to change things, and sometimes the results were surprising.

Refugees fleeing their countries might not have with them the documents proving their education qualifications. The Council of Europe Project “European Qualifications Passport for Refugees” aims to support refugees by promoting a methodology to assess refugees’ qualifications in absence of full documentation. The objective of the “European Qualifications Passport for Refugees” is to help refugees to be admitted to further studies or enter the job market in the host country.
