- Nurse compensated after being fired for whistleblowing
Brigitte Heinisch was a geriatric nurse. She claimed that practices in the old people’s home where she worked were putting patients at risk. After she made her allegations public, she was fired. Yet, the German courts found that her dismissal was lawful - so Mrs Heinisch took her case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Her case was then re-opened and she won compensation.

Vahan Bayatyan is a Jehovah’s Witness. Aged 18 he asked to do civilian rather than military service, due to his religious beliefs. He was convicted of draft evasion, and sentenced to over two years’ imprisonment. The Strasbourg court ruled that this had violated Mr Bayatyan’s right to religious freedom. Subsequent changes were made to the system of national service.

A power plant was allowed to carry out dangerous industrial activities just metres from the apartment block where Ivane Jugheli, Otar Gureshidze and Liana Alavidze lived in Tbilisi. The European court criticised the Georgian Government’s failure to protect the residents from the resulting pollution, which breached their rights. This judgment led Georgia to strengthen its environmental laws.

- "Use the Congress to deliver better on Human Rights. As analysed by the European Court of Human Rights itself, many condemnations of Member States for breach of Human Rights are due to decisions made at local and regional level. The Congress and the Court propose to work hand in hand :
• Preventively: by training local and regional leaders on human rights to lower the number of cases reaching the Court
• Post judgment: to facilitate the execution of judgments by accompanying cities and regions in improving their practices.
This would, without creating a new administration, strengthen synergies within the Council of Europe and help improve the execution of judgments which is a priority of every Council of Europe presidency".

- The Convention protects the rights of more than 700 million* people in #Europe.
All 46 Council of Europe member countries have signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights (#ECHR), a treaty designed to protect people’s human rights and basic freedoms.
Governments, parliaments and courts in each country are mainly responsible for upholding the rights set out in the convention.
However, the European Court of Human Rights acts as a safety net. Individuals can bring human rights complaints against any of the 46 member states to the court in Strasbourg after they have used up every possible chance of appeal at the national level.
If the European court finds that the applicant’s human rights have been violated, the country concerned has to provide justice to the individual. - “We are proud to state that our monitoring work has triggered many changes in law, at policy level and in practice,” stated Helga Gayer (Germany) in a video message after her re-election, on 30 March 2023, for a new term as President of the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. GRETA will soon start its fourth evaluation round of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. The President highlighted the topics on which GRETA intends to focus, including vulnerabilities to human trafficking, the follow-up of a number of issues in States Parties, as well as the impact of information and communication technology on trafficking in human beings.
