Bala Thiagarajan is a full-time professional artist who immigrated to the U.S. from India to pursue a PhD at Kansas State University. Bala's journey into art was unexpected; she didn't realize she had a talent for art until she started painting. Her initial inspiration came from Kolam, an art form millions of Tamil women practice daily in South India. She wanted to bring this art onto a canvas she could hang.
Her creative process is one of discovery, often beginning with a blank canvas and no prior vision, where the finished piece is as new to her as it is to a first-time viewer. Her primary technique is grounded in incorporating her culture, referencing elements such as henna, Kolam, dancers, and braids as points of connection. She also mentions a process called slip-trailing, which involves piping liquid clay on clay to create textured lengths.

Colorado Inside Out presents: The Civics Bee
Kyle Dyer shares highlights from the recent Civics Bee competition held at the University of Denver on April 9, 2025. Hear from the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from around the metro area who have spent months studying U.S. history, government, and civics.
The competition involved questions on foundational civics topics, such as the Supremacy Clause from Article Six of the Constitution and landmark Supreme Court cases like Marbury versus Madison. To reach the finals, students had to write comprehensive essays on community concerns. In the finals, participants provided a three-sentence summary of their essay topic, followed by three minutes of questions from judges.
The challenging topics tackled by these young students included wildfire prevention, homelessness, affordable housing, and ice detention. Other specific issues addressed were air pollution from vehicle emissions, exces...

The Heart of the West // Charly Fasano
In this video, we explore the intersection of art and public space with artist Charly Fasano and David Moke, the director of Night Lights Denver.
Charly discusses his specific artwork featured in the story, which was inspired by a replay of the "Rubber Ducky" song sung by Ernie in Sesame Street. He chose the rubber duck as a subject because it is a positive, funny, and goofy image that can change people's day and evoke memories. His piece, like many currently featured in Night Lights Denver, utilizes stop motion animation, a technique Charly became interested in while living in.
To celebrate his work being shown, Charly created 500 little duck drawings, some of which are featured in his projection piece, to hand out to friends in Denver. He found it rewarding to interact with people about the art and felt it helped reconnect people, especially in a post-COVID world.

PBS12 first spoke with Representative Brittany Pettersen in November 2024 as part of the Humanize Colorado: Women in the Workforce series. At the time, she was expecting her second child.
PBS12 recently caught up with the Congresswoman to find out what’s changed since then. Hear about her bipartisan efforts to pass a measure that would allow proxy voting for new and expecting parents.
