- Description
- Two Japanese companies have teamed up to achieve one big goal: producing hydrogen on the moon.
Takasago Thermal Engineering has designed a mini electrolyzer that can adapt to low gravity and endure a rocket’s intense vibrations during liftoff. Once in space, the hydrogen-making machine will be operated remotely from ispace’s Mission Control Centre in Tokyo.
“We started to study hydrogen almost 20 years ago. Now, we are developing a large-scale electrolyzer. What we do in space would give us definite technology and skills to... differentiate from the competitors,” said Hiroyuki Muraoka, Takasago Thermal Engineering’s executive officer, in an interview with “CNBC Tech: The Edge.”
For the mission scheduled to launch by the end of 2024, Takasago is bringing a small amount of Earth water for the electrolysis. If the experiment goes as planned, the company will scale up and eventually make hydrogen from lunar water on upcoming missions.

It's all part of an effort to decarbonize aviation with hydrogen, which has earned ZeroAvia a spot in TIME Magazine's top Greentech companies list.
"ZeroAvia is solving the climate emission problem caused by aviation. We're developing engines that run on hydrogen to generate electricity and power aircraft without emissions," said James McMicking, Chief Strategy Officer at ZeroAvia, in an interview with 'CNBC Tech: The Edge'.
Displayed in the hangar during CNBC's visit was a Dornier 228. The aircraft has been retrofitted with a leftside propeller powered by a hydrogen-electric engine and used in ten flight tests. Nations are investing in their armed forces too.
In Germany, arms maker Rheinmetall inaugurated a new factory in February that will produce artillery ammunition, explosives and rockets.
Aerospace and defense company Kongsberg also opened a new anti-ship and cruise missile manufacturing plant in Norway last June.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, military expenditure reached a peak of $2.4 trillion in 2023, the highest year-on-year rise since 2009.

- As the aviation industry looks to lower its carbon emissions, the race is on to find an alternative way of fueling air travel, and hydrogen is looking to be a frontrunner.
To prove its potential, a team in Les Sables-d'Olonne, France is building a hydrogen-powered aircraft, which aims to be the first to circumnavigate the globe. It goes by the name Climate Impulse.
Leading the team is Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard, who was part of the Solar Impulse team that flew a solar-powered plane around the world between 2015 and 2016. He believes the project could be an important catalyst for the aviation industry.
"A lot of people say that you cannot decarbonize aviation. Climate Impulse, that's my call against defeatism, against skepticism, against all the people who say there are no solutions," Bertrand Piccard told CNBC Tech: The Edge. "There are a lot of solutions, but hope will come only if we take action."

- As the aviation industry scrambles for ways to reduce its carbon footprint, hydrogen has emerged as a high potential solution to its problems.
In 2022, aviation accounted for two percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency.
The International Air Transport Association, the trade association for the world's airlines, has committed to achieving net zero by 2050. IATA's 330 member airlines will rely on sustainable aviation fuel, offsets and carbon capture, and new technology to reach the goal.
Hydrogen and electric technology are anticipated to make up 13% of that shift – which explains why, according to Markets and Markets, the hydrogen aircraft market could be worth $7.4 billion by 2030, a 98% increase from 2020.
