- Audoo, a tech company founded by musician-turned-entrepreneur Ryan Edwards, is tackling one of the music industry's long-standing challenges — ensuring artists receive accurate royalties for their music played in commercial locations.
The idea was born when Edwards heard his own music being played in a London department store, and he became curious about how royalties were being tracked and paid.
He said he uncovered a "huge problem with inaccuracy" and set about creating a solution in the shape of a small plug-in device which recognizes and registers music.
The old method consisted of manual surveys and radio data sampling, leaving much to be desired in terms of accuracy. Audoo's devices provide a new level of precision, ensuring artists are paid for every play.
"This is in everything from gyms to retail locations, cafes. We're in schools. We're in nurseries, you name it. Anywhere that you hear music out and about, we are there," E...

- Vinyl records may be music's most enduring format. The 12-inch vinyl LP is a format that is nearly 80 years old, but its popularity has been steadily rising over the past two decades.
In 2024, 30 million vinyl records were sold in the United States and United Kingdom alone, and the global vinyl market is projected to be worth $1.5 billion by 2030, according to a report from Research and Markets.
"It continues to grow," said Barry Hurley, the managing director for Packaged Sounds, a vinyl pressing plant just outside London.
"The format itself hasn't changed too dramatically, except for the addition of lots of different colors and special effects vinyl, which we specialize in," Hurley told CNBC's Converge.
Unfortunately, the records loved by music enthusiasts for their rich sound quality are made from non-renewable materials and carry a high carbon footprint.
"PVC is one of the materials that's used currently in press...

ARRI partnered with live events operations company, Creative Technology, to meet the growing demand for virtual production facilities.

But it hasn't all been plain sailing. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, passenger capacity for the airline plummeted from 3.4 million monthly travelers to just 11,000.
Steering Singapore Airlines through the crisis was Goh Choon Phong, a 30-year veteran who rose through the ranks and became CEO in 2011.

But there’s another way: flying with first-person-view (FPV) unmanned aerial vehicles.
Tong Cheuk Fung specializes in this more hands-on approach, giving pilots a first-person view of the flight.
“Wearing goggles, gives you a more immersive experience where you can make judgments a lot more accurately,” he said.

- Description
- Arenas are often thought of as purely functional: a music venue, an expo or a place where athletes go head-to-head and where rivalry is encouraged.
But what if there was more to these places? What if they could also lead new innovations?
That’s exactly what the Johan Cruijff Arena did on August 11, 2024, when its home soccer team Ajax hosted rivals SC Heerenveen in a game that ran entirely on renewable energy.
By using the venue’s solar panels to power two super batteries and a wind turbine, the stadium lights, escalators, beer taps and the lighting in the players’ tunnels were all powered by clean energy.
“We try to not only be more sustainable as a total arena, but also try to educate our supporters” Tanja Dik, CEO of the Johan Cruijff Arena, told CNBC’s Converge in an interview.
The stadium’s long term goal is to achieve net positive by 2030, not just for matches, but for concerts and other events too. By...

- Since joining ServiceNow in late 2019, Bill McDermott has been laser-focused on AI, driving his vision to position the company as "the AI platform for business transformation."
This isn't just an attempt to capitalize on a trend; ServiceNow has been working towards this goal for some time.
"We were building large language models with Jensen Huang and Nvidia more than five years ago," Bill McDermott told CNBC's Christine Tan on the latest episode of Managing Asia.
With AI the topic du jour, there are a lot of businesses vying for attention in the space. However, McDermott believes ServiceNow is "not actually competing with them."
"If you think about the marketplace today, it's largely built on companies that are 50 plus years old. And those systems of record, they're good. But they were built in silos: finance, HR, sales. We have a platform that pans and spans all of them, because we integrate with them," he explained.

Sacramento-based startup California Cultured is hoping it has found a solution to the industry's supply issue.
"We are still starting with basically a little living bean. So, instead of planting it, we put it in a liquid environment, and we trick the bean over thousands of passages to grow the way that we want," said Alan Perlstein, California Cultured's founder and CEO, in an interview with CNBC Tech: The Edge.
"We're directly growing the tissue that gets turned into chocolate," he added.
It takes a minimum of six months and up to three years to grow a cultured cell line. When the cell line is ready, finished cocoa and coffee can be made in about a week.

Cultivated meat is made by a process of extracting cells from an animal and “feeding” it a nutrient-rich solution. These cells grow and multiply. They are then put in a bioreactor — which is a large tank — to continue to grow.
The end product is like a paste, which Ivy Farm said can be mixed with real meat or other plant proteins to create a variety of products.

Founded in 2019 as a spin out from the University of Oxford, the company produces lab-grown meat. Its headquarters house its laboratory and production facility.
Cultivated meat is made by a process of extracting cells from an animal and "feeding" it a nutrient-rich solution. These cells grow and multiply. They are then put in a bioreactor — which is a large tank — to continue to grow.
Ivy Farm is focused on beef at the moment, and CNBC's The Edge visited the company's lab to see the process.
The startup currently gets its cells from animals that are already being slaughtered for food. It then goes through the process of growing those cells before putting it into its bioreactor called "Betty." This tool can make three tonnes of meat per year.
The end product is like a paste, which Ivy Farm says can be mixed with re...
