- Description
- Every analyst and economist is saying that taxes are coming in the Autumn. But will Rachel Reeves turn to her old friends at the banks for an easy cash grab?
Half-year reporting season has come to a close, and the UK’s Big Four banks – Lloyds, Natwest, HSBC and Barclays – have pocketed a combined £24.1bn in pre-tax profit for the first six months of the year.
Analysts at US banking juggernaut JP Morgan warned the Chancellor will look to raise as much as £30bn in taxes later this year to restore her eroded fiscal headroom.
Additionally, HSBC boss Georges Elhedery warned a bank levy would dent growth, and Lloyds’ Charlie Nunn said it wouldn’t be consistent with the government’s growth strategy.

- Can Canada reach a 'very hard' trade deal with the US?
The brief extension to US President Donald Trump’s 90-day tariff pause is over, and countries that didn’t get a US trade deal in time are being hit with heavy tariffs.
This time – unlike in April – it looks like these levies are here to stay. Markets lurched almost immediately, with London’s flagship FTSE 100 index dipping half a percentage point within an hour of opening, having hit record highs in the last couple of weeks of July.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X that he is “disappointed” by the tariffs. He says that Canada accounts for just one per cent of the supply of fentanyl coming into the US, after Trump used the proliferation of the drug as a major reason behind targeting Canada.

- Prime Minister Keir Starmer is now talking a big game on backing small businesses – often referred to as the backbone of the UK economy.
But firm owners may not necessarily be feeling empowered to grow under this Labour government – mixed survey results have made it harder to take the temperature on how these businesses are feeling about reforms.
In fresh legislation to be set out in parliament, the government is set to offer powers to an independent public body to dish out fines to firms making late payments to small businesses.
This new crackdown comes as the prime minister has previously complained about its 11 billion pound cost to the UK economy.

But for Keir Starmer, the lead-up to Monday will involve prepping for a high-stakes trade negotiation – to hopefully spare the British steel industry a lot of pain.
He’s going for lunch and a “bilateral meeting” with Trump on Monday, where Starmer will be looking to shmooze some extra trade concessions out of the US President.
So far, the government has managed to secure carveouts for the automotive and aerospace sectors, but the steel industry remains particularly exposed.
Though the 25 per cent levy on British steel is half the global rate of 50 per cent, ministers are hoping that the tariff can be wiped out altogether.

- Description
- Keir Starmer and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi have signed a trade deal worth an estimated £6bn, with the UK Prime Minister hailing the landmark agreement a “historic day” for Britain and India.
The trade pact – the result of over three years of negotiations – will see tariffs on the whisky and cars that British firms export to India drastically reduced in return for Britain opening up elements labour market to Indian workers.
The bilateral deal is understood to be one of the most valuable of its kind to the UK economy, and will bring the average tariff on Indian imports from Britain from 15 per cent to three per cent. It is hoped the deal will eventually provide an annual boost of £25.5bn in bilateral trade between the two countries.

The average household spends at the grocers has now reached £5,283 a year, which could add £275 to bills “if people’s shopping habits stay the same”, Kantar added.
“Just under two-thirds of households say they are very concerned about the cost of their grocery shopping, and people are adapting their habits to avoid the full impact of price rises,” Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said.

- How did the UK government spend £1.4 billion on management consultants?

- Description
- Government spending on management consultants rose by over £150m during Labour's first year in office, despite the party's manifesto pledge to halve the amount departments dish out to third-party advisers, City AM can reveal.
Total spending on management consultancy contracts totalled £1.44bn during the first 12 months of the government's four-year term, up from £1.28bn the year before, according to data from public sector contract platform Tussell.
The jump in spending has left the government's pre-election pledge to crack down on what it branded "the excessive use" of the sector in jeopardy, and is further evidence of civil servants' proclivity to lean on corporate advisers to help manage key government projects.
