- Description
- Monzo and Revolut are changing the game with their plans to build “super apps”.
For Revolut, this has included the launch of its hotel booking platform “Stays” in 2021, its crypto network in 2024 and mobile services in 2025.
Now, Monzo has hopped on the mobile market ship with confirmation that the group is exploring plans to offer phone services.
Consumers have responded to this with open arms, with Monzo boasting over 13 million users and Revolut recently surpassing banking giant HSBC with over 50 million customers globally.
However, the push to diversify is beyond just a gimmick – and for many fintech firms, it could be an existential mission.

- Will Rachel Reeves’ tax hikes drive non-doms out of the UK?

- Description
- One of the hardest political questions of the year is: How many non-doms have left, or are planning to leave, the UK?
Warnings have been sounding out from the ranks of accountants, advisers and lawyers that there would be an exodus of high-worth individuals the moment the tax changes were brought in.
There’s even been a lobbying group for non-doms – the first of its kind – called Foreign Investors for Britain, which tried and failed to secure a new golden visa-type scheme.

- The UK government needs to raise a lot of money, and fast. However, they’ve also promised not to target certain headline personal taxes.
So, will Chancellor Rachel Reeves plug a roughly £50bn fiscal black hole with taxes on wealth?
Well, reports are emerging that the Chancellor is planning a crackdown on Inheritance Tax, in particular on gifting cash. At the moment, as long as a cash gift is made more than seven years before death, it’s entirely tax-free.
However, it’s not just the super-rich who are gifting chunks of their estates before they die; it’s the middle-income taxpayers too.

The annual State Department dossier, published on Tuesday, warned that Britain’s human rights record had “worsened during the year” amid “serious restrictions on freedom of expression”, and singled out the government’s new Online Safety Act as a key factor.
The report said the UK had urged technology companies, including major US social media platforms, to “censor speech deemed misinformation or ‘hate speech’”, and cited claims of a “two-tier justice system” following the Axel Rudakubana killings, calling it “an especially grievous example of government censorship” against ordinary citizens.
Kyle hit back on Thursday, telling the LBC that the UK has “fantastic” and “historic” measures.

- The UK’s Online Safety Act was bigged up as a landmark measure to protect children. Instead, it sparked an instantaneous and furious backlash days after it was introduced, and it’s becoming a political waking nightmare for the government.
The new law mandates that web providers enforce ‘highly effective’ age verification to block minors from harmful content. However, its dangerously vague wording has led to widespread and seemingly indiscriminate censorship, sparking a political firestorm.
Now, a petition for its repeal has already been signed by more than half a million people. Nonetheless, tech firms, paralysed by the fear of massive fines of up to £18 million, have adopted an incredibly cautious 'better safe than sorry' approach.

The fresh research from the Centre for Social Justice showed a 21 per cent uptick since 2015 in older individuals exiting the workforce due to health conditions.
However, the CSJ points to a bigger systemic issue, suggesting the system is far too quick to mark people as completely unfit for work.

According to the White House, the pair will discuss “a variety of topics pertaining to the US-UK relationship”.

- Can Rachel Reeves survive the UK state pension time bomb?
- Runtime
- 1:16
- Date posted
- Description
- The Bank of England has said inflation will be higher than expected in September – and that could leave Chancellor Rachel Reeves in limbo at this year’s Autumn Budget.
At the Bank of England's interest rates decision on Thursday, economists upgraded an inflation forecast for September to four per cent. This is absolutely crucial for Rachel Reeves.
Price data for September are used to calculate increases in benefits and the state pension, and the triple lock means that whatever is highest out of inflation or wage growth will represent the increase kicking into effect in April.
If inflation does hit four per cent, the annual state pension will rise by at least £460 for most pensioners, which could cost the Treasury billions of pounds more.

- How Trump's 50% tariffs on India and threats to Putin impact Ukraine war
- Runtime

- Description
- President Donald Trump’s trade policies are starting to intersect directly with the War in Ukraine. This week, Trump announced that Indian imports would be hit with a massive 50 per cent tariff – up from the expected 25 per cent.
He accused India of “fuelling the war machine” after the country imported Russian Federation Oil. This all comes as Trump’s threats to Vladimir Putin – who he sees as stifling peace efforts and approaching negotiations in bad faith – have been cranked up a notch.
Putin has been given until Friday, 8th August, to agree a ceasefire with Ukraine, with the threat that Trump will impose sweeping secondary tariffs if he doesn’t.

- Description
- Brewdog has found itself in hot water this week after an ad got banned by the advertising watchdog for claiming that its beers are a “solution for loneliness”.
So, is this a marketing stunt gone wrong, or a kind of PR nirvana for the self-proclaimed bad boys of beer?
It was a promo for the brand’s ‘Wingman’ session IPA, with its cartoon eagle mascot positioned as a firm friend who QUOTE “stands firm”, in the face of “wifi fails”, “hostile” weather and delayed friends.
Advertising guidelines explicitly ban the promotion of alcohol as a coping mechanism or treatment for feelings of suffering and isolation.

- What the motor finance ruling means for UK consumers and banks
- Runtime
- 0:54

- Description
- The motor finance scandal has gripped the City of London's banking landscape over the last few years and put a number of Britain's biggest lenders in the hot seat.
Lloyds Banking Group – which owns Britain’s largest vehicle financing firm Black Horse – was forced to set aside £1.2bn in provisions for potential compensation.
The saga ramped up a notch when the Court of Appeal ruled it was unlawful for banks to pay a commission to a car dealer without the customer’s informed consent – these were dubbed “secret” commissions.
But lenders Close Brothers and First Rand took their fight to the Supreme Court to successfully overturn the judgment. And this ruling has spared City banks a hefty bill that one analyst said could have topped £44bn.

- Motor finance: A timeline of the legal saga so far
- Runtime

- Description
- You might be wondering what the Supreme Court ruling on Motor Finance is all about and where this high-profile case comes from in the first place.
It started with three individuals who brought legal action against Close Brothers and South African FirstRand Bank over secret commissions in their motor finance arrangements.
Amy Hopcraft sued Close Brothers, while Marcus Johnson and Andrew Wrench sued FirstRand Bank.
Originally, each of these cases, like many more, was issued to local courts around England. However, it was these three cases that ended up at the Court of Appeal – the second-highest court – and were merged together for a hearing.

The Independent has reported that the Freedom is on the table to get the US President in the room with the City of London Corporation, which hopes to use the symbolic honour as part of a charm offensive to push for a closer trading relationship.
Reportedly, plans have been discussed to fly Trump from Windsor Castle to Winfield House – the US Ambassador’s residence in Regent’s Park.
While the purely symbolic honour would not confer any particular modern powers onto the President, though he could, in theory, herd sheep across London Bridge, Trump is reportedly keen on receiving the City gong.

- Why UK banks fear Autumn Budget tax hikes from Rachel Reeves
- Runtime

- Description
- Every analyst and economist is saying that taxes are coming in the Autumn. But will Rachel Reeves turn to her old friends at the banks for an easy cash grab?
Half-year reporting season has come to a close, and the UK’s Big Four banks – Lloyds, Natwest, HSBC and Barclays – have pocketed a combined £24.1bn in pre-tax profit for the first six months of the year.
Analysts at US banking juggernaut JP Morgan warned the Chancellor will look to raise as much as £30bn in taxes later this year to restore her eroded fiscal headroom.
Additionally, HSBC boss Georges Elhedery warned a bank levy would dent growth, and Lloyds’ Charlie Nunn said it wouldn’t be consistent with the government’s growth strategy.
