- It was an amazing mix of cultures as the Exhibition of Arts and Culture: Argentina-China opened on June 24 in Beijing.
The exhibition, which was held at the Embassy of Argentina and co-hosted by the International Art and Business Alliance, featured Chinese calligraphy and paintings, as well as traditional music and costumes.
Not to be outdone, Xu Xuanyi, chairwoman of Chinese Association of Argentine Tango, performed the traditional dance of Argentina with her partner for the guests.
Li Baorong, deputy director-general of the Latin American Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was present for the event along with other officials from both countries.
According the Argentine embassy, political, economic and social ties with China are at an all-time high.
The exhibition was cited as a prime example of how to bolster relations through arts and culture.

- Zhao Yang, 34 years old. He established his own practice, Zhaoyang Architects, in 2007.
Zhao Yang's office is located in Dali. He has two partners, Li Ye and Wu Zhou. All three of them went abroad to study, and all returned to contribute what they learned.
Zhao is a man of few words, except when he talks about his work. Two of his buildings featured in the video were resort hotels. Both were impressive and unique, taking advantage of Dali's beautiful mountains and sea.
He uses local handicrafts in his designs, and gets personally immersed in the process. He believes that a hands-on approach, especially working closely with local builders and craftsmen, will bring buildings to life.
And it does: his work is unique and romantic.

- Wang Shuo, 33 years old, started the practice of META-Project with partner Zhang Jing and Max Fu in 2009.
Wang is a leading authority on hutongs. His office is in an old hutong and this is where he does his research and design.
For Wang, a hutong is like a forest: from the outside it all looks the same, but there is really lots going on under the trees. In his words, you have to understand it to be able to save it or make it better.
This philosophy of preservation is vital to his design.

- Matt Hope is an artist from the UK. Living in Beijing for five years, he has observed the extreme environmental conditions. As an installation artist, he invented a bike to generate clean air for its rider.
Hope said he made this bike to bring more attention to the air problem and to spark discussion about what an individual can do about the poor air quality.

- Shannon Fagan came to China in 2010. The 37-year-old American was a commercial photographer back in the US, but because of the economic downturn he decided to move his business to China.
Rather than taking pictures, he said, he makes pictures -- designing a photo to capture a specific attitude, activity or atmosphere in China. Clients can purchase them from his company's library to help sell their products.
Stock photography is a fairly unknown industry in China, Fagan said, and he runs much of his business on speculation of what the market needs.
Donning knee and elbow pads during shoots, Fagan has suited up for business in China.

This approach to massage, together with herbs and acupuncture, is a fundamental part of centuries-old traditional Chinese medicine. Nowadays, the therapy is enjoying a revival, with a growing allure for Chinese parents who seek an alternative to antibiotics for childhood ailments. "I always believed in TCM, but the effect of TCM massage on my child still surprised me," says Tang Dan, a young mother of a 2-year-old boy in Beijing.
"It was like magic."
In December, Tang took her son to a TCM hospital because of his lingering low appetite since birth, and a pediatrician there suggested a pediatric massage.

- Fifty-year-old Zheng Wei is a retired English teacher living in Beijing's Dongcheng district. She and her husband experienced the Great Chinese Famine and living among the peasants during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76). Their 20s were difficult. In 1973, Zheng and her husband Ren Yongmao had their first and only child.
In 1999, their son was diagnosed with malignant lymphoma. The couple tried everything to find a cure, but faced extreme financial difficulties. The young man died in 2002. Zheng and Ren had envisioned old age with their son, but their dreams were crushed.
Millions of parents who have lost their only child grew up during the 10-year "cultural revolution". This turbulent period left them spending their teens or 20s without much purpose, so they wanted their children to experience life to the fullest. Losing their children has left many of them in despair.
