- Dr Hafez Ghanem discusses the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for African economies and their development and poverty reduction efforts, and assesses the priorities and obstacles for establishing a comprehensive response to the crisis.
While the acute strain placed on health systems by the COVID-19 pandemic is already in evidence, the long-term economic fallout from the crisis is yet to fully manifest.
For Africa it is the economic impact that may leave the most enduring legacy: from the direct expense of measures to treat, detect and reduce the spread of the virus; to the indirect costs of domestic lockdown measures, global supply chain disruptions and plummeting commodity prices.
As decision-makers globally start to plan for the scale of this economic shock, strategizing in and on Africa to meet the challenge will require unprecedented planning and commitment - and will need to be matched by support from international partners to enable ...

Against this backdrop, Ukraine has attempted to hold Russia accountable for the annexation through the international court
What is the role of the International Criminal Court in addressing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by Russia in the occupied peninsula? Were lengthy International Court of Justice proceedings, for example on the narrow issue of alleged racial discrimination in Crimea, worth launching?

Originally used to describe someone adept at computer programming, the term ‘hacker’ has developed criminal connotations and attained a degree of notoriety.
Used to gain unauthorized access to data and to test the vulnerability of computer systems, hacking can support nefarious activity while also having the ability to expose corruption.
Through high-profile cases such as Wikileaks, organizations with the purported aim of complementing democracy and safeguarding citizens have come under increasing scrutiny over the way data is collected and handled.
As democratic infrastructures adapt to the digital age and its potential dangers, can hacking protect and strengthen democracy?

The first months of 2020 have proven tumultuous for Iraq. The US killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in January threatened to engulf the region in war and led to continued tit-for-tat violence between the US and Iran that has become almost a daily reality in Baghdad.
Amid the ongoing protests that since last October have challenged the social contract and led to a violent response claiming 600 deaths and injuring tens of thousands, the government is still without a prime minister after Adil abd al-Mehdi's resignation in November 2019, leaving the country directionless.
Most recently, the spread of COVID-19 threatens to expose a mismanaged healthcare system. At the same time, the rapid fall in the price of oil has impacted the government's ability to respond to or cope with these crises.

While the current leadership election offers the party an opportunity to debate and redefine its position on issues such as immigration, security and Brexit, the extent to which Labour can reconcile its factionalism remains unclear.
As Labour undergoes a process of reflection, what kind of foreign policy agenda should the party rally behind that will also appeal to voters outside of its traditional base?
Can the Labour party be unified on its approach to international issues? Is an internationalist foreign policy an attractive choice for voters? And as Brexit tensions persist, what might the party's framework be to ensure new trade deals and partnerships align with fundamental ...

Attention is turning increasingly to options for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – ‘carbon dioxide removal’ (CDR). Alongside afforestation and reforestation, the main option under discussion is bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
This is a process through which the carbon emissions from burning biomass for energy are captured before they are released into the atmosphere and stored in underground reservoirs. However, in reality, BECCS can have many drawbacks, as this animation outlines.

- Since the SARS epidemic in the early 2000s, China has trebled spending on its health services, and consequently has met the coronavirus outbreak with a much more robust response.
Robert Yates, executive director of the Centre for Universal Health at Chatham House, is an internationally recognized expert on universal health coverage (UHC) and progressive health financing.
He talks about how the outbreak of the coronavirus spreading beyond China saw problems for tackling the epidemic because it was harder for people to access health services in other countries due to a lack of investment in public health systems or inequalities of wealth which means poorer people cannot afford to pay for healthcare.
Rob says that since 2002, the Chinese government has trebled their public health spend which means they are better prepared, with a much faster response rate which hasn’t been replicated in some of its neighbouring countries.

In schools and universities, it involves ensuring curricula accurately reflect a global conversation, while in the field of journalism and media, decolonization involves representation, diversity and apprecia...

- Description
- Nathan Robinson, editor of Current Affairs, argues that democratic socialism is an innovative and moral political ideology that champions an emotional reaction to injustices in the world.
Contrary to the facades presented by liberalism and neoliberalism, democratic socialism can support genuine transformative social, political and economic change.
Socialism has many iterations, but some experts contend that selective views of its historical applications have dominated its reputation. Furthermore, they argue that the tendency to focus on the lexical semantics of words and phrases associated with socialism can undermine nuanced discussions on its merits as a political ideology.
In reality, socialist principles can be found in varying degrees across institutions and political systems. As demonstrated by figures such as Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Jeremy Corbyn, radical socialism is being mainstreamed in western politics, reflecting ...

Since its beginning in the 1950s, the evolution of European integration has created a series of predicaments for the UK which has been forced again and again to redefine its relationship with the European entity.
As Britain seeks to leaves the European Union, it will again need to find a new relationship with it at a time when the future of the US commitment to Europe is also uncertain.
Assuming Brexit takes place, to what extent could the federalization of the EU pose issues for the UK? What does a move towards federalization mean for security globally?
And how would Britain and Northern Ireland navigate a relationship with a customs union federation?

How effective are containment methods such as quarantine?
There’s been a run on facemasks, do they work?

- Description
- Often defined as the capacity to influence others without coercion or force, soft power differs from traditional military capabilities in favour of more subtle forms of influence rooted in values, culture and civic institutions.
Consistently upholding democratic values and human rights can contribute to a nation’s soft power as much as its cultural icons and legacies.
However, utilising soft power – the power of attractiveness – is not straightforward: the government is only part of a broad mix of institutions and actors with a role to play.
Can the UK develop a long term approach that brings together all of the components of its soft power for a common purpose?
What are the key sources of Britain’s soft power? How has Brexit affected perceptions of Britain internationally? And with the UK’s departure from the European Union now confirmed, how should we think about its soft power in the future?

- Description
- Chatham House experts consider the current crisis between Iran and the US and the relations between the two countries going forward.
The United States’ killing of Qassem Soleimani – commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force – in Baghdad on 3 January this year escalated tensions between Iran and the US to new heights, and risked sparking direct conflict between the two powers.
The full repercussions of the US’ decision – and Iran’s relatively muted military response – on the Middle East are yet to be felt. For the Iranian regime, retaliation is likely to take the form of a longer-term campaign to increase its influence in the region. In Iraq, the death of the de facto leader of the Popular Mobilisation Forces alongside Soleimani, repeated violations of its sovereignty and a movement to end US military presence on Iraqi soil are likely to have considerable long-term security implications for the country and wider reg...
