In October 2020, the UK and Ukraine signed a ‘Political, Free Trade and Strategic Partnership Agreement’. It is the first agreement signed by post-Brexit Britain with an emerging market economy.
Spanning over 200 pages, the agreement aims to strengthen political, security and economic ties between the two countries. It sets out an ambition to develop a framework for a so-called 'Strategic Partnership Dialogue' at a high political level and aims to unlock new resources such as UK Export Finance.

- Panellists discuss what type of economic policies to expect from a Biden presidency.
Joe Biden’s first days as president of the United States will likely focus on securing a stimulus package to address the economic consequences of the coronavirus if one has not already passed. But securing a stimulus deal is just the first step in Biden’s plans for economic reform.
While much of President Donald Trump’s economic policy centred on cutting taxes and deregulation, advisers to the Biden campaign emphasized addressing long-standing economic inequality through increased taxes for high-income households and businesses along with other priorities like mitigating climate change.
How much influence has the progressive wing of the Democratic Party had in influencing ‘Bidenomics’ and will we see a strong departure from previous Democratic administrations? How may his ideas for reform depend on Congress and are there opportunities for economic refor...

- Will ‘Trumpism’ continue to define the Republican Party when Donald Trump is no longer in office?
Donald Trump’s nomination as the Republican presidential candidate in 2016 was seen as an unconventional choice for the Republican party, with his later win being viewed as a retaliation to ‘establishment’ party leaders in D.C.
Since taking office in 2016, however, Trump has successfully consolidated Republican support and retains high approval ratings amongst Republican voters.
How will internal divisions within the Republic Party on foreign policy matters concerning Iran, North Korea and China be resolved, and how will this influence broader foreign policy debates? If Republicans retain control of the Senate, what can we expect for US foreign policy under a divided government?

TICAD VII, held in August 2019 in Yokohama, sought to strengthen partnerships between Japan and Africa in three main areas: technical cooperation; business and women’s entrepreneurship; and next generation and people-to-people connectivity.
The first UK-Africa Investment Summit held in January 2020 highlighted similar themes, with an emphasis on investing to generate sustainable growth and create jobs. To date, response to the virus has been characterized by political competition. Biden has promised to re-join the global community in its commitment to the Paris Agreement – but this could be the easy part. President Zelenskyy won his election in 2019 largely on a promise to ‘put corrupt officials to jail’. Since he came to office and with absolute majority in the parliament, he has made some progress by launching the High Anti-Corruption Court and reinstating the law on illicit enrichment.
But his record in fighting corruption remains questionable: the Constitutional Court took a series of decisions that exposed the fragility of the anti-corruption infrastructure created since 2014. The head of the National Anti-Corruption Agency (NABU) was ousted, and the system of electronic declarations for government officials was abolished.
The speakers mark out the key opposing forces and offer an update on the state of judicial reform. Their remarks also cover what failure in the anti-corruption policy could mean for Ukraine’s relations with the West.

Relations continued to unravel in 2020, and in June North Korea’s state media reported that Pyongyang could see no future benefit in maintaining a relationship with the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, the US-South Korea alliance is facing its own challenges. Washington and Seoul are still negotiating the contentious Special Measures Agreement (SMA), unable to agree on defence cost-sharing, and tension persists over their diverging attitudes to China.

- While the coronavirus pandemic has seen a dramatic drop in air travel, prior to the COVID-19 crisis there had been continuous growth in global air traffic: the number of air passengers had reached a high of over 4.5 billion in 2019.
Carbon emissions from aviation account for more than 2.5 per cent of global emissions and these have grown by 32 per cent over the past five years. The COVID-19 crisis may have paused much air travel, but it has also brought into focus the scale of international air travel and its associated emissions.
As the airline industry looks to recover, technological innovation in aircrafts and fuels and the development of new business models and policies could shift air travel off its emissions trajectory. Interacting with the panellists, participants will be invited to discuss different ideas and explore how best to reinvent the future of travel.

- Employment in South Africa fell by an estimated 18 per cent between February and April 2020. The measures imposed to control the spread of COVID-19 suffocated an already weak economy and unemployment has hit a new high.
The stated aims of the government’s economic reform plans include the support of job creation in labour intensive industries, but the reform of the state and rebalancing of the economy and fiscus could lead to further job losses in state agencies and enterprises.
Protecting jobs while ensuring the health and safety of workers are dual priorities, and require the joint commitment and ‘social compact’ of labour, business and government.

- Description
- Expert panellists discuss practical examples of tech-sector activism and best practice in defending civic space online.
Emerging technologies and digital tools have created new possibilities for inclusive and democratic civic participation and engagement in recent years.
Online platforms, internet providers and software designers have provided important channels for individuals to exercise their rights to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom from discrimination, as seen in the use of Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook in the organization of the initial Hong Kong protests and this year’s Black Lives Matter marches.
Online civic space is increasingly important for civil society actors operating under repressive governments, and tech companies form a highly influential group in the protection and support of such actors.
There are already numerous examples of such support from large tech firms. For example, Mozilla recen...

- The COVID-19 Gender Gap: How Women’s Experience and Expertise Will Drive Economic Recovery

- Description
- The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the world’s social and economic inequalities and vulnerabilities. It has painfully demonstrated once again that in times of crisis women’s livelihoods and jobs are more at risk than men’s.
At a time when policymakers need to restore confidence, preserve financial stability and revive growth (while aligning short-term actions to medium- and long-term sustainable objectives), inclusive rebuilding is an imperative, not an option.
Catalysing the economic potential of women is one of the most powerful solutions at policymakers’ disposal for addressing these challenges. Furthermore, focusing on gender equality now could add $13 trillion to global GDP by 2030.
This event launches a COVID-19 recovery action plan which has been informed by the insights of global thought leaders in a series of events convened by the Chatham House Gender and Inclusive Growth Initiative.

- Description
- At a time when standards of democratic governance are under threat, Malawi’s constitutional court judges set an example by upholding the centrality of the rule of law and separation of powers.
The 2019 Malawi presidential election result was overturned after a panel of five High Court judges identified 'widespread, systematic, and grave irregularities' in the polls and called for fresh elections.
Despite high-level bribery attempts and threats, Justice Healey Potani, Justice Ivy Kamanga, Justice Redson Kapindu, Justice Dingiswayo Madise and Justice Michael Tembo – who arrived in court under armed escort and wearing bullet proof vests – delivered their 500-page ruling which upheld the constitution and defended citizens’ democratic rights in the most difficult circumstances.
While some African countries have made important progress in the consolidation of democracy, this is now under threat as the pandemic creates space for authoritarian opp...

- US 2020 Elections – The Politics of Gun Control
- Runtime

- Description
- This webinar explores where both presidential candidates stand on gun control and consider the political landscape for reform.
America’s gun problem extends beyond mass shootings. Two-thirds of US gun deaths are suicides and, more recently, concerns of pro-government militias emerged at the forefront of the issue when a white teenager took to the streets of Kenosha and murdered two citizens.
The conversation on gun control often fails to acknowledge the intersection of police brutality, racial disparity and the cyclical nature of the criminal justice system.
Given that US public opinion on gun control is neither linear nor partisan, what are the prospects for reform and how are voters perceiving the debate?
What power does the US president have to mandate gun control? How can the conversation on gun control be made more inclusive, constructive and multi-faceted? How do we contextualize recent clashes between race protestors and ar...

- Description
- Discussion on the extent of voter suppression in the US and whether an expansion of voting by mail will enfranchise more US citizens.
The innocuous, independent US Postal Service has recently become the focal point of yet another partisan battle as Democrats claim reforms implemented by Republican officials are attempting to undermine the US election.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated a widespread adoption of mail-in balloting would lead to voter fraud, while officials on the other side of the aisle claim it is the only way to safely vote in the midst of a pandemic.
Is the USPS adequately prepared to manage an influx of ballots? Will objections to mail-in ballots lead to voter suppression? How do you restore confidence amongst citizens that their votes will be counted? How do these concerns compare to structural considerations – such as available resources and mismanagement – in impeding the democratic process?

But now BLM has helped create a global conversation about rights and police brutality, he tells Fundile Maphanga, a member of Chatham House’s Common Futures Conversations community. Real change, he says, will have to start at the bottom of society, not among the privileged.
